The eye drops helped, her eye is now back to normal.
What I'm still worried about is the fact that she's still lethargic. She'll wander around a little bit, but not with her normal energy. She's still eating and drinking, but as far as I can tell it's less than usual.
Does anyone know what...
I've got a hen who's eye has been closed for a couple of days now.
She's a mystery age (but at least one year old) light speckled sussex hen.
The eye seems to bug her, she wipes it in her feathers from time to time and also shakes her head a bit. She's also been more lethargic than usual, but...
Thanks everyone... I'd ruled out Mareks on the basis that she was too old, and a number of the symptoms didn't fit. I'm relatively sure it was botulism, or some sort of similar infection, but that I got to it too late to save her.
Thanks for the comfort everyone, I do realize that I don't think she's going to make it, but she is a fighter!
I'm about 99% positive she had heat stroke the last time. We're in northern NSW and we had a whole string of about 2 weeks of cold weather and storms, then all of a sudden one hot 30+...
Anyone with an answer to these questions?
I woke up this morning and she was on her back in the tub we've been keeping her in. Thought she was dead, and now she won't open her eyes at all
Haha! Thanks for sharing your stories everyone
And no, we haven't got any eggs to candle, we've just been eating them! So just as well there aren't any roosters.
After thinking about botulism I did a search for it on this forum and found an amazing thread (the link if anyone in the future needs it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=219553&p=1 ) with a ton of info.
I went out and got some epsom salts, gave her 1 tsp in 30 mls of...
Thank you, botulism looks like it might fit. This is what Strokey looks like most of the time now, with her head dropping down, sometimes it falls forward and she rests with the tip of her beak on the ground. Does this look like botulism paralysis? (I couldn't find any photos on Google of what...
I'm giving her 1/2 childrens vitamin every day (couldn't find baby vitamins) with no iron.
About an hour after I gave her the first vitamin yesterday she stood up for a little bit, didn't move around, but it was still an improvement.
This morning I gave her the vitamin, which she likes (it's...

They are all from our flock, yes. I don't know if they all belong to one hen or if both have eggs in there now, since all their eggs look more or less the same.
Anyways, I took the eggs away last night and they're still sharing a box, I don't think I'm going to get them to separate...

Oh is it?? I thought now that they were all hens everyone was saying!!
And thanks everyone for the welcome. I'm learning quite a lot being here only a few days
No, I do not think it is a rooster.
Welcome, welcome, welcome! We are really glad you are here! We all had to learn...

And thanks everyone for the welcome (haha I laughed at the lisp joke!!) I'm learning quite a lot being here only a few days
Also, here's a photo of the other one we think is a rooster, next to one of the definite hens.
The three hens are all around the same size as the hen in this photo, maybe just a fraction bigger, and the one we thought was a rooster is just a tiny bit smaller than the rooster in this photo (at...
Chickie'sMoma :
actually, she said that they do have a second area set up for it but it is refusing to brood over them
Yes, this. There are three nesting boxes, all of them are large enough for all of the chickens, all have hay and the other two have had other eggs in them at some point that...
