Can you please identify this unknown bird?

A friend of mine found this in her front yard this morning and we have no idea what it is. Can you help us identify it? No wild birds are having babies now, so it must be some sort of livestock type. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

    coop and run size

I raise heavy breeds and have 2 rows of nest boxes stacked. Lowest row is 3 feet off the floor and 2nd row is 4 foot high. Initially, I had built them, starting at 18" off the floor and found that NO chickens would lay in the bottom boxes. I then raised them all and now find that most of the...

Just a Few Questions about Coops

Tarp may make clean out easier. That's an idea. We built our first coop raised about 12" off the ground and found that skunks enjoyed it as well. They were setting up house as fast as they could! Skunks we're cleared out and we ended up running chicken wire (held down with bricks and...

How important is having a top on the run?

I do not have a cover on my run. I've had chickens for several years and have never lost one to a predator. Your tree may help somewhat, as we too, have a very large tree covering a portion of our run.

Paging: livestock101 - Update on the rescued factory hens?

I'm livestock101! Hello! No, I never visit the other board, I've just been very busy lately. I do have updates and I ran out just now and took pictures. The one thing you'll likely notice is their combs (check out the first photo). They are shrinking, BIG TIME! Well I should say MOST are...

    DE

We feed DE daily and I don't measure it. I just put a scoopful into the feeder every morning with the feed. You can't overdose it, so need to worry.

http://www.slowfoodusa.org/ark/giant_chicken.html states: Jersey Giant Chicken The Black and White Jersey Giant Chickens are true to their name, as they are the largest capon table birds produced in the US. The Jersey Giant was developed in New Jersey in the 1870s by crossing several large...

livestock 101 - How are the factory hens doing?

Hello! Sorry, things have been hectic around here. They are doing fairly well. Their in a 12' by 24' coop. I hooked up the fans a week ago, so they should be living the good life; staying nice and cool. All are now eating and drinking, though one had to be put back into a small confined...

    video of my hen growling

Those video's are too funny. Question for ya. What are you using for nest boxes in that first video? They kind of look like plastic baskets or something. I like them.

How do I know if the eggs I buy are.....

I will agree with all the others. If your unable to find eggs near you from a local farmer or such, I would opt to purchase eggs that are marked "cage free" or "free range". Yes, it's very likely that eggs marked this way mean that the chickens never see daylight BUT they also aren't in little...

    How many can I get?

You want to have as much space as possible in the run. Your main concerns with space need to be addressed in the hen house itself. That's where your 4 square foot per heavy breed and 2 square foot per bantam breed are. The square footage recommendation is based on when a chicken can't or...

Picked up my factory hens....pictures and story

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. To answer questions........ How did I find this place? I'm not sure. I had heard that there was a place near me (within an hour drive) and decided to go to Google and search. This is what I found: http://www.manta.com/mb_34_C00FC_000/chicken_eggs...

Picked up my factory hens....pictures and story

I picked up my factory hens a couple days ago and a busy couple days it's been. I called the egg company on Tuesday to verify that they would be selling their "old" layers on the 21st of June, only to be told they were getting rid of them THIS week. I quickly made the 1 hour-1 1/2 hour trip to...

The dog owner called me... WWYD?

Last year I had a problem with the neighbors dogs who ended up killing some of our ducks. I did report them to the animal control (police department here in our town) and the man was fined for having vicious dogs at large. We will shoot the dogs next time I find them on my property. Take...

    Hens have ALL stopped laying

Things that come to mind: Are they too hot? Molting? Any chance you've got an egg eater? Maybe a predator getting the eggs? How about illness?

    What do you feed?

I have lay mash (with DE mixed in) available at all times as well as fresh water. In the morning they are also fed a flake of alfalfa hay and in the evening I throw out 1-2 cups of scratch to 70+ chickens. This works well for us.

    Buying battery hens

Thanks for the replies everyone. To answer some of your questions. I plan on getting 10 hens. I'm a bit nervous about getting them but I have the room and can provide the care. It scares me to think what they will look like. Here's a link that ranks the top US egg companies, including where...

    Buying battery hens

I was sitting here today thinking I wish I had more chickens. There's a large factory farm 45 minutes drive from here so I decided to call them. I told them I wanted some hens for butcher (a small white lie) and asked if they sell their hens after they no longer want them for laying. She...
