    The Aloha Chicken Project

Whew! I have caught, banded, weighed, and done some (very) basic evaluation on the Alohas this week. They're 9 weeks old. You can find my results in this spreadsheet here. I culled out 11 cockerels based on weight and one pullet who has not been doing well. They are marked in the list with a...

    Silkies, Sizzles, Showgirls (naked necks)

How much would it cost to get a Cuckoo Silkie cockerel, if that's even something you would consider?

    The Aloha Chicken Project

Crappy cell picture of "Shoulders" one of the bigger Alohas who has solid white shoulders. I'm thinking cockerel, especially with all that white coming in on the breast. It looks like his legs aren't going to be yellow.

    The Aloha Chicken Project

I'm pretty sure I have at least one Naked Neck Dun too. Lots of white on it too!: There's for sure 2 regular Alohas with Dun but I imagine there's probably more. So many little chicks to try and look at!

    The Aloha Chicken Project

I moved another 15 Alohas out into the grow out pen this morning. The rest will go out on Sunday. I'm thinking this one is possibly another dun:

    The Aloha Chicken Project

I received 50+ Aloha chicks a couple of weeks ago from Sommer. They're doing great and they're all so colorful! I moved some of them out of the brooder and into the grow out pen yesterday. They have 5 older chicks with them to show them the ropes. And some individual NN Aloha pictures...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I don't think that was it. Doesn't she have Sumatras? I'll have to search for my yearbooks that the kids have hidden somewhere.

Yes, I do believe you're very busy with birds!

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Eric Nelson breeds the SS Hamburgs (I believe he's an APA judge). I also saw a breeder in the 2017 APA yearbook with SS Hamburgs but I don't recall the name currently. Have you considered Minorcas? I don't personally care for their shape, but they come in your preferred colors, are large, and...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I was just told a couple of days ago that he's liquidated most of his stock due to health issues. Hamburgs are favorites. I actually found out about Urch selling his stock when I was asking for breeder recommendations for Golden Penciled Hamburgs. Found a guy who has had them for 30 years that...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

My #1 plan for 2018 is more breeding pens and a bachelor pen for cockerels. On the actual breeding front I'm working primarily with American Buff geese and Silver Appleyard ducks. With chickens my main projects are Speckled Sussex and a couple of EE color projects. Should my Sussex ever start...

Waterfowl for Meat Production Thread - Ducks, Geese, and Muscovies

I haven't on BYC in a while, but your comment came through to my email so I thought I'd better pop in and reply. Based on the dressed weight of 5-6# I would estimate that your live weight was only about 7-9#. Did you weigh them before butchering? How old were the geese? A fully grown (over 1...

    Any Barred Laced chickens?

Look up "Candy Corn" Polish. They're more or less Gold Laced + Cuckoo.

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

This might be a bit disjointed, so excuse me if it is. I've got a clingy toddler. For the most part any of the white egg breeds you get from hatcheries are going to be heavily skewed to egg production rather than meat. They do mature quickly (butcher at 12 weeks or sooner). You can select for...

    Double Silver Laced Polishes?

To get the double laced pattern you need to remove the Columbian (Co) gene from the single laced Polish. It sounds simple enough, right? Unfortunately you'll probably have to outcross to another breed to get rid of that Co gene. I think all Polish varieties have it, but I could be mistaken...

    Producing Calico Silkies

In Cochins the "Calico" color is a Mille Fleur with hysterical mottling. They're usually on a red/buff base. Here's someone's pic of their Calico Cochin: I'd actually never heard of Calico being used on anything but Cochins. Thanks for teaching me something new!

    Producing Calico Silkies

The "Calico" part is caused by the mottling gene. The best breeding method to get it into Silkies will take a lot of generations to produce a nice quality Silkie with the heavy mottling. Option 1: Start with a Black Tailed Buff Silkie male X Mottled Silkie female. Cross the offspring...

    The Aloha Chicken Project

Hey Sommer! I know you're always on the lookout for very spotty Speckled Sussex so I thought I'd show off the 3 pullets I got from Meyer this year + 2 Swedish Flower Hens that were sent as a bonus. SS #1 SS #2, with SFH to the left. SS #3 SFH #1 in the back middle. SFH #2.
