(Not sure if this is the right place to ask or not)
Has anyone been a 4-H project leader for chickens. My son would like to do a chicken project next year and so I am thinking I might take the class that is needed to be the project leader. We have chickens already and other parents in our...
I am in Nampa, kids go to Kuna schools. I have 5 Black sex-link and 3 RIR who are now laying. I have 10 Golden sex-links who still have a couple of weeks before they start to lay. Got 6 eggs today from my 8 layers!
I am thinking that at some point I will sell some of our eggs, but I'm not sure about the cartons. What do you do about cartons? Do you buy cartons, tell people to bring their own, what? I have several cartons stashed away, but what about when I run out of cartons?
TIA
Thanks for all the great responses!
Color code with crayons! You must be very organized.
I have lots of pencils around and will date that way. Maybe I will try color coding at some point but right now things are crazy around here with showing at the county fair.
Thanks again for all the...
It has taken my pullets a couple of weeks. Some are still just starting to lay, so I am getting different sized eggs.
The ones that have been laying for at least two weeks are becoming regular and are laying a good size egg. I have RIR and Black Sex-links that are laying right now and they...
I have been putting eggs into empty cartons and putting them in my fridge. Kids come along and add or take some out, so I am not sure any more which are the oldest. We are starting to get at least 5 eggs regularly each day now, but that will soon pick up because I have 18 pullets.
Is there a...
I am curious. How common are double yolks? My son just ate two of them this morning. A couple of our girls have only just started laying this past week at 18 weeks. Is it just something that happens when they are starting out, or can we expect more doubles because of genetics?
We have 3 RIR...
We only just started getting eggs this past week, and here is what my son is having for breakfast this morning.
P.S. I only cracked open 2 eggs!!
We have RIR and black sex-link for those of you wondering and two of them started laying at 18 weeks old. The rest are being free loaders still.
Correct me if I'm wrong, since I have one group of chicks that is 7 weeks old I will switch to a grower feed, then wait till their laying and switch them to layer feed. I have read somewhere about mixing their feed with oatmeal so they don't grow too fast, is this true?
