Every time I take the bucket of feed out to refill the big feeder, one of my EE hens takes a running jump and lands on my shoulder. She hangs out there until my bucket is empty and then jumps down and walks away. She doesn't even eat any of the food! I guess she just likes the view.... none of...

I would frown on feeding chickens cat food for the simple fact that 99% of cat food has poultry in it... I don't like feeding chickens chicken..... The whole cannibal thing....

My buff orps just started laying this week and they are 24 weeks old... It depends on the chickens. My golden comets started at 17 weeks. and my EE well I got one about three weeks ago... then the past week I have finally gotten one every other day... So don't fret it will happen...
I also had a problem with my roo. He was friendly and seemed more brotherly than king roo. Then one day me peck at my son and drew blood. Ever since that day he acted mean and aggressive. He would chase down the other roos, and peck their feathers out for no good reason. He would attack anyone...
They have been laying for about two months now. There are 52 chickens in a coop 40ft x 15ft. there isn't a "run" but I have them fenced in a 250ft x 150ft yard with lots of tall grass areas, small trees (about 5ft tall), and three chicken hide outs placed around the yard. It sits 600 ft from the...
I wish I had the good sense to have taken a picture, but I had an egg about the size of a lightbulb, and to my surprise it was a triple yolker!! It was the only one I had ever heard of. I asked my friend who has the same breed about it and he says I am telling tall tales.... I am kicking myself...
I've had some very strange eggs the last few weeks. Some of them look long and skinny, others are stark white (brown layers) and then others look like the ones in the pics below... any clues to what the heck is going on?
Mine got into my garden and demolished the pile of potatoes that I thrown aside. There weren't any green ones, just ones that were cut or holey.... I planned on plowing them into the soil this fall. Should I be worried? Its been a week since they ate them and they still lay eggs and are still...
I whipped this up in a weekend, out of the stuff I had laying round. Its changed a little since the pictures but I really like it.
its an old contractor truck cap that was sitting in my backyard. The rear doors were damaged due to vandals (while it was on my truck) and I took it off and hoped...

I disagree, calcium is not to be confused with grit. Calcium breaks down in their digestive system and grit (usually granite or quartz) stays in their 'gizzard' and helps them to grind up their food (chickens don't have teeth ya know). I would recommend a feed dish containing grit on...
I don't know about turnips, but mine will eat the heck out of radishes. they even escaped into the garden and dug up my radishes and ate half of my crop.... Mine aren't laying yet. good luck.
I love it! I will try it this week and will post my results... I'll even snap a few pics just for fun. Thanks for the suggestion about the deer netting... I even slapped my forehead when I read your post. Duh. why didn't I think of that...
Kudos to you Angie n Maine!
After watching and waiting for a while I am still debating the breed of this chicken. I haven't decided yet. It could be an EE but there are subtle differences and there is another breed of partridge rock that has green legs... If you don't believe me look it up. The name is Zielononozka...
Hi Everyone,
While I now live in Michigan, I'm a native hoosier. I still work in Indiana and all my family lives there. (Ok my wife and kids live with me) So I thought I'd say hi anyway. Its hard starting a hobby farm with no one to talk to about the ins and outs and the funny stuff in between...
My fav is one of my EE chickens. I haven't named them yet. But I would say that the EE chickens have the most personality of all of my chickens... They even have jumping contests to see who can Jump the highest! The one pictured usually wins.... gets to eat what ever they were jumping for...
I'm with ya there, I finally let my birds out into the field and now they hardly touch the feed bins. I used to go thru 100 lbs a week, now 50 lbs every two weeks. and I have 52 chickens!
They are probably eating lots of tasty bugs and grass. And I feed them the veggie/pasta scraps from dinner...
you know where I live we consider those things weeds. They grow all along the fields and roads... of course its just the orange ones but still, once you have them they never go away.....

Ok so I am new to this. my chickens outgrew my brooding coop.... And like so many other ppl I know I'm broke. So I turned my sheep shed (I don't have sheep was here when I bought the place) into a coop. it 20' x 30' and I fenced off a 20' x 12' square in one corner (for my garden tools and the...
