    egg eater?

It wouldn't hurt to try the golf balls or ping pong balls in their nest and hopefully they'll stop pecking until they get more comfortable w/ the newcomers. :) We leave ours in all of the time just in case. Five boxes w/ 3 balls in each one for 23 layers.

    egg eater?

Do you have anything in the laying boxes, like golf balls, w/ your current laying hens??? It could be stress from the new pullets even though they're not completely together... it shouldn't take too long for them to get used to them though.

Great Dane verses a BA Pullet... am I treating her correctly?

Apparently I wasn't or the damage was more severe that I suspected. She passed away today. :( She did lay an egg for me yesterday.... unfortunately, it was her last. sigh....

Great Dane verses a BA Pullet... am I treating her correctly?

The pullet lost but she's doing okay. She's almost 11 months old. Thankfully she has/had a lot of feathers to protect her for the most part. Mostly feathers missing on her back and tail, but one area did rip the skin back. A good sized section under her wing, about 2" x 5" or so. I...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

11/24 yesterday... the girls are really on the up and up now. However, we got snow tonight so they probably won't be out foraging like they had been the last few days.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

3/24 yesterday... I'm happy w/ that!! Getting some very nice looking and tasting winter eggs. I wasn't sure if they'd all stop or not. Only a few went through molt. I imagine that'll change this fall.

What do you do in the winter for water?

It's only 50 watts. It's for a 5-15 gallon tank so it's plenty for a gallon of water. It has auto shut off once the water gets to optimum temp and it has an indicator light that tells you it's heating. The chickens don't bother it at all.

What do you do in the winter for water?

Ours is beyond simple. Concrete block as the base to hold an old refrigerator drawer (holds about a gallon of water) and a submersible aquarium heater. It works great and keeps the water thawed out 24/7 even w/ the polar vortex temps we've been having this winter.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

The most we've gotten this winter is 5/24. Yesterday we got 4/24. I can't say that I blame them w/ the weather we've had.

    Found in nesting box

Oh, now that is weird. We've never had anything inside that membrane before. Hmmm. I hope your wife doesn't find it either. It might not be pretty! :)

    Found in nesting box

I agree that it's a soft egg shell that just deflated and a little dirty from being in the coop. Looks like someone needs more calcium in her diet. Ours have oyster shell 24/7 but we still get a soft one every now and then. Completely normal... if there is such a thing when referring to...

    chickens laying outside nest boxes

We have hens and pullets that just started laying a couple months ago. Not all lay in their boxes but in designated spots on the coop floor. As long as I keep finding them and they're not broken I'm happy.
