The girls are fine and happy to have life back to their normal. I am okay now that I am sure they are not hungry. It has amazed me how smart and interesting each pullet can be, they are more like lap dogs. They push each other off my lap to get petted and are always under foot, loving the life!
I am so thankful our girls survived Hurricane Ian. We left for vacation the Sunday following Ian, making sure there was plenty of water and food in their secured run. A very dependable young man agreed to look in on the girls twice a day. He was instructed to let them into their play yard...
This was Oct. 9th, do you still think pullet? We have been gone a week and now I am leaning towards pullet too. The red cone is getting lighter and the feathers on the back appear to be more rounded. Not larger than other birds purchased at the same time.
I am learning daily and having a great time experimenting with what the girls like to eat. I want to try a suet type treat next, but I think cold weather would be better for this. I have done sprouts and fermented seeds, currently starting the first trays of whole wheat fodder. Interesting...
This is Elegant Elgie. She is a 7 week old ISA Brown and loves to perch on my lap, rubs and hugs. It is too funny as I sit with all the girls every morning and evening. Now they push each other off so they can get their turn. I'm loving this new hobby and the girls!
Oh, wow. I was flipping out this afternoon while holding our 6 week old pullets. They are missing a lot of neck feathers. You don't notice the featherless neck unless you pull back the long outer growth back. These girls (and I am pretty sure a Roo) act like I am their momma. I sit with...
The girls have spent 2 nights in their coop. I am putting them in around 7:30 and then waiting for the door to close at dusk. It is so shaded that I decided today to use the timer instead of the light setting. I still have not mastered the light, it only gave two options, manual or light...
That is a great idea about the spotlight! We have several lights around the yard to highlight sculptures. It is very shady where their coop is set up but I am definitely going to try that trick. We have coyotes occasionally and our 18 lb. dog doesn't like going outside after dark. A raccoon...
