Polish/Houdan (?) What Sex Is This?

Hi all, I'd be very grateful if you could kindly take a look at these two photos of my Polish/Houdan bantam and see whether you can tell the sex? It is 4 weeks old. I am hoping it's a pullet. Thank you in advance.

    Polish/Houdan?

Thank you! I had to look up Crevecoeur... I see how they could be confused. I know there are a few Houdan breeders around here, but I've never seen Crevecoeur in this area (central Australia). I looked at Sultans too - but yes, definitely only 4 toes on this little one. I'm no good with genetics...

    Polish/Houdan?

Hi @Pyxis Thanks for the response. I know what cross it is supposed to be, but I have only their word for it and I didn't think either Houdans or Polish had feathered legs? It's definitely from my Polish, but I'm confused by the feathered legs.

    Polish/Houdan?

Hi all, This chick finally emerged. (Pipped early afternoon end Day 23, pointy end of egg, no further progress whatsoever, cheeping fading, ended up with a fully assisted hatch early Day 25, dried membrane, yolk sac fully absorbed, head between thighs). 15 hours later, seems perfectly healthy...

    Advice Raising Single Chick

@FeatherMtnFarms @aart @azygous @CTKen @lazy gardener Thank you to all of you for your replies. My main problem was finding buddies; I'm in Oz, we are still late summer with temps in the mid 30sC, and most sensible people turned off their incubators at Christmas. No hatcheries around here...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

@donrae @Paganrose I was scared Little Boy (as he/she is named by my grandson) would crow and get me into trouble with my very difficult neighbours (who would call the council on me if an ant crawled from my garden into theirs).before I could arrange a new home. I was put in touch with an...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

I will definitely update you - just have to hold my nerve till he/she crows or lays an egg!

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

@Alexandra33 I so hope you are right, he's (she!) is a friendly little thing and I'd hate to have to see it go, but it would have to, at the first sign of a crow as my neighbours in town will instantly jump....

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

@bgil No way are you a bother! I'm fairly new to keeping chicken too and I've had wonderful help from this group! I've found that no question of mine (basic though they usually are) has ever been treated as silly or inconsequential. We all have to learn and I'm doing that with the amazing...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

Hi, you need to tell people how old your bird was when you got it. It looks a good bit older than mine and not a Wyandotte! I don't mind at all that you jumped in on my thread, but I think you might do better to delete your post and repost yours in a new thread so that people can give your...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

Hi @donrae Thank you for bothering, I appreciate it. I bought it as a pullet on 11 Jan, from a lovely lady who had so many similar age birds running around a small space that it was a case of her grabbing one as it came within reach, rather than actually choosing. She thought some of them...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

Thank you - my only comment is that the comb was red like this about 5-6 weeks ago, hence my dilemma :( I appreciate you thoughts!

    Advice Raising Single Chick

Hello all I'd be grateful for any advice on how best to raise a single chick. I can't have a rooster here - bought a young laying Polish bantam who had been running with a Houdan roo. A week later she laid her first (for me) egg - curiosity got the better of me and I wondered whether the egg...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

Yes, he definitely has a masculine expression on his face, but like you say, no pointy saddle feathers. I'm too much of a novice still to have much confidence in my own opinion so I'm grateful for yours :)

    Silver Laced Wyandotte - Rooster?

Thank you, that gives me hope! I posted photos about 6 weeks ago when I'd had him a week or two and I estimated he was 12-14 weeks by then; the breeder didn't have any real clue and thought it had been 12-14 weeks when I'd first bought it. It coloured up a lot in the next week or two and I...
