If they are disagreeing on temp get a glass, a quart jar is good. Fill with ice and then fill it nearly full with water. It is important to have as much ice mass in the solution as possible. After a few minutes that solution should be at 32 F or 0C. Cubes are OK but crushed is better if you...
I just took one of my Columbian Wyandotte hens away from the chicks she hatched a few weeks ago and put her with the rest of the flock. How long until I can expect her to begin laying?
I have 15 hens. Spotted Sussex, Barred Rock, Columbian Wyandote, and Buff Orpington. At the moment I have 3 nesting a Buff, a Wyandotte, a Barred Rock. I am only getting 3 to 5 eggs per day. I think I have a few loafers. How do I figure this out? Then what should I do about it? I thought...
It appears that in addition to a better thermometer, I should get a hygrometer too.
I assumed that as long as the water was available to evaporate there was enough humidity in the air.
Will adding a fan increase or decrease the humidity? Since the air is now moving over and around the water dish rather than there being no circulation, how will that change things?
WOW What a thread!
I like my M1 Carbine for the varmits. Mine is accurate enough, easy to handle even in close quarters, Halo sight makes it point and click w/ 14 extra rounds in case you have more than 1 visitor.
I carry a 38 Ruger LCR revolver or M1911A1 45 ACP Kimber Custom Classic as a...

So how do I go about adjusting the humidity? The machine that I have has little water troughs molded into the bottom. I filled them and heve been checking them every couple of days. They are still full.
The dog, 6 to 10 cats, chickens, and calves all live together and share the same barn at night. The calves irritate the chickens by insisting on sniffing them as they are scratching ion the feedlot.
The only time there is a problem is when the chickens decide to get into the dog food while the...
In order to lay fertilized eggs, does a hen need to be serviced every time she is preparing to lay an egg, or does one servicing fertilize multiple embryos at once and allow her to lay several fertilized eggs over some period of time?
I apologize if this is a naive question. I know a lot more...
My Lace Wyandotte rooster is working the heck out of my 5 Columbian Wyandotte hens. Would this be pure enough for you?
I am about an hour and a half sw of Effingham IL
I'll get one of the digitals. Thank you for the idea.
The fan, another option, was not in stock when I bought everything else. It should arrive Monday or Tuesday. No doubt with another junk thermometer.
I did mark the cheapos after the incubator settled at the "Hair under 100" on the good...
I purchased an incubator by a "Famous" maker. The turner was an option so I bought it too. Both had a thermometer in the box.
Why include an itty bitty thermometer marked in 2 degree increments when the goal is 99.5 degrees?
I tested theses gems of precision against two well regulated and...
The chickens have discovered the dog food bowl. I usually leave it full so the dog and how ever many cats I happen to have at the time can eat at will. Suddenly I found the bowl completely empty twice a day, and poo blobs that match the dog food color HMMMMMM. I have been putting the food...
So now I am back to the original question. Where do I put the boxes?
Should I allow the potential of hatching and brooding to affect my box placement, and how?
I am asking about the setting because I have a neighbor that is about to be overrun with Bannies. They seem to set everywhere and...
OK. Here we go. Maybe off subject for this thread, but....
Did I just read that I should have a separate place for a hen to hatch and raise chicks? Is the lazy fair (bad french, sorry) approach to haphazardly allowing chicks to be born and raised not good? I am going for the low maintenance...
Thank you all for the help!
I was thinking of the hang out type because there will be a 5' +/- alleyway between the coop and the adjacent barn. I was going to attach it to the barn, but decided that with the materials I have and the difficulty in tying the roof line to the barn roof (hate to...
I am "designing" a coop for the 11 hens and a "grouchy" rooster that Grandpa has said the kids can have. I have a 10X12 concrete slab currently being held to earth by a pile of junk.
I think I have the design pretty much figured at least in my head, from what I have been reading here and other...
