I'm looking for a half a dozen delaware chicks to start as breed stock for a flock of meaties. I'd be open to older birds if the price isn't outrageous. I'd rather find some local than get some from Cackle. Anyone have any in the Franklin county, MO or surrounding areas?
Please don't go to Cackle! I was there just the other day and they had deformed ducklings, a few even had misshapen skulls, in the bin for sale and zero food and water for them. The guy told me they can't have water because they get each other too wet. Then he said they're controlling their food...
This egg is at 14 days incubation, checked them this morning and it was fine, came to turn them and just found it like this. When I candled it I saw the air sac and nothing but a full black egg. Pitch it?
And I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were speaking specifically about the gene that causes the dilution, yes, there's only one, I apologize if I sounded patronizing.
There are diluted blacks. They're called charcoal. More rare even than silvers. But most charcoal breeders will insist it's not a dilute I think to side step the controversy. They have to register them as blacks though so I'd beg to differ. I think the hype about wash out with dogs is just that...
No Weimaraners do not have troubles with washing out. But silvers weren't the result of Weimaraners being crossed in, just a recessive gene popping up, similarly to yellow and chocolate, at which point there were accusations of sneaking different breeds in as well. There's speculation, but no...
I told my husband about this and was telling him I was wishing you'd started years ago so I could've stumbled on this thread and the end result without having to wait. I hate suspense! I'll just have to admire it as you go along, and those cute little chickies.
They're actually grey with hints of green and yellow from the diluted golden hazel that most chocolate labs have. You can see then here
And yes, their coats are similar to Weimaraners, there was actually controversy about the origins of the silver lab as having Weimaraner snuck in because some...
Thank you! He's definitely a work in progress, but that's how these things work. Hopefully in two or three more generations we'll have it where we want it
You can see that the dilute even works on their eyes, when he finishes shedding his winter coat he'll be a more even hue, the light shines off of them as silver, but there's a definite brown undertone that hints at their genetic origins
Here's Duke Oliver Gunner "D.O.G." a second generation silver. He was sired and whelped by silvers who each came from mating two silver factored chocolates. He's 9 months old today actually, and will go on to sire a litter January of 2018 provided he performs as we expect him to all around...
I have to admit I clicked on this thread because I've been eyeing Isabels as the last birds to round out my flock and a lengthy genetics lesson is too interesting to turn away from! My husband only recently agreed to let me get any birds and I've been slowly killing the poor, patient man. I'll...
This is wonderful work! My husband and I breed "silver" labs, which is just a chocolate lab with two recessive dilute genes washing out the the chocolate to a wonderful smokey color. One of the concerns, other than perfecting the dogs' conformation to breed standards of course is the potential...
She's alive and doing great! I let her go back out in the coop where life's just better for a chicken and kept an eye out all day, guess she just tried to worry herself to death and needed a day in the spa.
Oh dear, I hope she gets bigger! Silkies are already so small, they're 2/3 the size of my barred rocks that are a week younger, but it's encouraging to hear that yours more or less recuperated from the stress. Which brings me to this morning's news, I checked on the chick thus morning and it was...
The chick is sitting up and has its eyes open! I placed some scrambled egg in the sink I have it in and it ate a tiny bit, has taken some water with nutridrench in it and is overall more alert and active. I'm going to keep it on the heat pad for a while longer then put it back in the dog kennel...
