When I went to check on my birds one of them had her neck bent almost 80 degrees to the right. There is no visible signs of external injuries and it’s not likely a predator attack. The only way I can imagine she hurt herself is if she fell off the top of the henhouse (about 5’ tall), or if one...
I like the moat idea!
But there are salvaged window screens behind the black metal bed frame in the photo; they are fasten together with heavy duty zip-ties. But I might want to do the hardware cloth in addition. Where does one buy the cloth at?
Thank you! I believe that there is much satisfaction in turning stuff, that would have ended up in the dump forever, into something useful again. Plus it saved me a ton of money...
I am interested in seeing some photos of your repurposed coops. The back wall of my coop doesn’t look as...
The plastic fencing is what I was worried about as well. My primary concern is to keep my Wife’s “evil” dog and neighborhood cats out of the coop. I have never seen a snake or cyote in 5 years of living here, but there is an owl that frequents the area at night.
What would be a good way to...
I know it doesn’t look as fancy as some of the amazing builds I see here on BYC but it is my first build, and I have zero wood working experience.
I am very proud of it because, with the exception of the screws, locking hardware and a couple of bags of concrete; it is constructed entirely of...
Thank you for the great article on how to make the straight cuts! I see so many awesome coop builds on BYC and I feel “out-gunned” with my hand tools.
I also like the I the plans you shared for the roll-out nest boxes. I’m going to try to fab one up tonight, and see how it comes out.
Thanks...
Good advice!
Do you think the boxes are something I can fabricate my self or is it easier to just use old milk crates, like some BYC users do? I did build the coop and run myself out of discounted “cull lumber” from Home Depot.
Thank you for your advice!
The run is what I consider preadator proff (it keeps my wife’s “evil” dog out at least), but I like the idea of having the boxes attached to the coop and off the ground.
Hello again everyone!
I was just wondering how many nesting boxes and where to place them in my 120sqft chicken run. I have 8 young hens that will soon be reaching six months old. Should I attach them to the hen house or set them up separately? There is not an abundance of space in the run...
A small, solar powered, electric fence has kept my wife’s “evil” dog at bay. It only took 2 or 3 good shocks for the little bastard to learn not to mess with my flock... lol!
Tell your friend (politely) that she is misinformed... My flock free-ranges in a 10,000 sqft. yard and still needs their daily feed of crumbles or pellets.
The method your friend is practicing would be like me going on an week long hunting or fishing trip, and not bringing a cooler filled with...
Sorry it took so long to reply.
Here is a picture of the brooder I have the young pullet in. I have it placed outside in the chicken run now (my wife wanted the laundry room back). The over-night temperature doesn’t get below 70° here in Phoenix, so I think it won’t be too cold for her. The...
:thSilly chickens! Things were kind of a mess around the coop - cleanout day. <sigh> That's the down side of chicken math. Double the adorable chicks mean double the work....folks forget that sometimes. I know I did.
AGREED! the math doesn’t ever add up. A $3.99 pullet some how becomes a...
Thank you for all of your advice, I am going to implement your feeding strategy. I think chickens are great pets, I just don't care for how mean they can be to new comers.
That is a really good looking flock you have by the way! Is the large hen in the foreground a white leghorn?
