same McNugget as on http://www.sufficientself.com
As of 4/12/10, I have a mixed flock of birds
1 Rhode Island red rooster, 6 Buff and 4 Black Orpington hens, 1 silver Ameraucana hen (see lays green eggs), 2 Dominique hens, 3 mixed or unknown hens, 1 little stray rooster (mixed or unknown) that...
I love Ren Fairs! There's one in NC we go to every year
http://www.royalfaires.com/carolina/
It's held in Oct-Nov on weekends.
The fall makes it more confortable for the heavy costumes. I just love the Joust!
One of my hens is behaving strange. She's not eating, not laying, and will extend her neck and make what seems like a coughing noise. It's like she has something caught in her throat. Any suggestions?
I've got 2 that's gone broody this week. First time for me too. Earlier this spring I hatch 14 in an incubator. Now I'm goning to try it "a la natural", to see who's more successfull.

The only way I know of having a roo AND unfertile eggs is if you keep the roo physically seperated from the hens, ether by crate or fence. Otherwise, the roo will do what comes natural. If you have your roo physically with your hens, gathering your eggs every day and putting the...
WOW! She has really turned a round with your TLC!!! She looks wonderful! Her feathers looks so much healthier and her eyes are so brighter. I would have thought her feathers were going to be ragged until molt. How wonderful! I bet she will soon be paying you back for your kindness with...
Here are some updated of my 14 chicks brooding. I'm going to try to guess which are male and which are female. Let me know if I'm right. I think I have an even split of 7 each. Not all are pictured, and some are pictured twice.
This one is McNuggetJr's favoriate. I'm sure he is a male
I...
Here's my veggie garden
Things are just getting started in the garden, but we are looking to have early peas, strawberries and lettuce (mixed greens) within the next few weeks. The other veggies should start coming in around end of June. Then we eat until frost!

We finally got the aprons made and on the girls. Here's a few that have with matching aprons.
From day to day we will find an apron laying on the ground or in the house, but for the most part the girls seem to accept them. When a hen sheds her apron, we wait until dark and go "dress" her...
My first hatch of 14 chicks will be 6 weeks old next week. I plan on introducing them to their parents soon. But I'm not sure exactly how to go about it.
Right now, they are in my garage, 7 in the brooder cage and 7 in the large dog crate. I divided them this weekend because it looked a bit...
A while back I posted that I had some pecking problems
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=304967
Well... I wasn't "seeing" the pecking anymore, but most of my hens were getting bare spots on their backs. Like most people I have to work for a living so I'm not home to "see"...
McNuggetJr's eggs started to hatch Friday. 2 out of the 4 hatched. Out of the 2 that didn't hatch, one seemed to have died before lockdown, and the other was fully formed but didn't pip. The two that did hatch died soon after. I guess the cross between the Ameraucana hen and the Rhode Island...
I did a quick look back at the first pics posted and the bird (he/she) looks soooooooo much better. I know it has a way to go, but what ever you are doing, keep it up! It sure is a lucky bird! Zoloft is a cute name, and it does seems to fit. But I think "Lucky" fits better, even if it never...
Sorry, have been away from the board a couple of weeks. Things have been crazy, but got a lot of work done while McNugget Jr was on spring break (barn painted, chicken house roof replaced, barn doors made and hung, general yard spring cleaning etc).
Anyway - Chick Update!
All chicks that...
Putting a gutter on the chicken house and use a 33 gal NEW never before used trash can as a catch barrel to catch the rain water from the gutter when it rains is a great idea you would think? Not having to haul water out to the chicken yard which is too far from the house for a hose and a...
