Day 20...I checked the incubator and found it was reading 102!! The entire period the temp has been solid at 99-100. Are my birds cooked? Gaaah! I'm using a Farm Innovators 4200 with fan and turner, with an Accurite external thermometer/hygrometer.
I set 25 on 2/28, hatch day 3/20 or thereabouts. 8 cream Legbars and 17 SLW. My first time hatching shipped eggs. I'm holding out a few more days before candling. My incubator has been holding temp between 99.3 and 100.2 and I log the temp and humidity every 12 hours. I didn't weigh them.
Over the past few weeks, I have lost 3 hens. I usually free range my flock on our 5 acres, and we are in a suburban area. I have seen hawks, but none of them seem big enough to carry off a full grown large breed hen (I have BO's and barred rocks). With two of the hens, it is a complete...
It actually looks better today since I got some of the crust off when I fixed the pasty butt, but it's not going to win any beauty contests. Cute as the dickens though and surprisingly calm in the brooder alone.
My one little chick has to be the most pitiful thing I've ever seen! It's all crusty, and had a terrible case of pasty butt. I got it all cleaned up except for a big crust blob on the top of its head which seems to be stuck like glue. However, it has a great voice and is very active and...
Well, it looks like only one hatched :( He/she is going to be a lonely little chick until the babies I ordered arrive on Friday. I learned a lot on this first hatch though. One, BYC is a great resource and I should have read more...Two, the eggs go in the turner FAT end up...Next hatch should...
I'm on day 21...I candled on day 14 and had 2 definite and 2 maybe eggs....well I just got home to a wet little chick in the incubator and another egg pipped...It looks like the "maybe's" didn't make it. This is my first hatch and I have a silly question....how long before I need to put them in...
There are two access holes in the top of the 'bator to add water, which goes down into the bottom. I only added about 1/4 cup. The directions with the setup said to keep the humidity around 57-60%, then increase to 65% when ready to hatch. I'm clueless on how to "regulate" the humidity. It...
I've also set my first batch in my first incubator...they will also be barnyard mutts (BO and Red star mix). Hopefully they will be egg-laying machines! Only problem I seem to be having is high humidity in my incubator. When I went to bed last night it was sitting right around 60%, this morning...
Thank you! I've ordered some right away and will proactively treat the new hens. Hopefully I can integrate them with my flock and they will be happy, healthy birds :)
