    Splash Orpington: pullet or cockerel?

I think it's a trick of the lighting. It was twilight. They look more splash in the day time. We have a couple lavendar orpington hens and these littles are more white and freckled than my lavs. Yours are so cute!

    Splash Orpington: pullet or cockerel?

It would be nice if they were both pullets. They look so different from each other; it's hard for me to imagine them ending up the same sex.

    Us vs. The Rats

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and advice. I think we are going to dig out the run and mend hardware cloth underground. We have a bit left in the garage from another project so it may only cost me a weekend. I'm not really looking forward to all that mending but oh I just can't...

    Us vs. The Rats

Our coop is pretty big. That would be a huge undertaking. Might be worth it, if nothing else will work, though. The entire run is screened with hardware cloth, which is also buried at least a foot underground. There are no gaps larger than 1/8" in the whole thing, except underground.

    Us vs. The Rats

I really appreciate the enthusiasm for this topic. We use a hanging feeder and waterer already, but obviously tge aren't rat-proof! Is there a rat proof feeder people use? We have talked about pouring in quickcrete but it seems like they will just dig alongside it. I guess I need to figure out...

    Us vs. The Rats

over the summer/fall, it became apparent there were rats stealing our chicken feed. We have had chickens for seven years and never had a problem with rats. We built a garden coop from plans we bought online, and covered the entire coop with hardware cloth, which we also buried 12" underground...

We got this EE in our latest batch of chicks. She's brought up a lot of questions for us about whether she's a she. Almost 4 weeks old. What other photos would help ID her?

    Movie star chickens?

Very cool! I didn't know that they got whiter as they aged, and it seemed much whiter than the d'uccle hens I've seen. Thank you both so much!

    Movie star chickens?

I saw a newish Jane Fonda movie, Peace Love & Misunderstanding. Jane's character keeps a variety of rare breed chickens at her farm. Most of them I recognized but... what is this? Thanks in advance!

I feel a little bit insane, but we set up a webcam for our babes. We've raised chicks before, but never hatched them ourselves so this feels so special. Here's the link if anyone needs a day-old chick fix. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/brooder-cam-2012 Chickielady -- that's very kind of you to...

Longshot question: anyone within an hour of Olympia have Marek's vaccine and a tiny syringe or know where to buy it? We have four newly hatched chicks and are having a hard time getting it. I guess I should have planned for this, but it's our first hatch ever and I thought it would be easier to...

Quote: I think the muscovies would be better, more dedicated slug hunters but yes, my hens annihilate slugs. I had heard that chickens weren't crazy about eating slugs, so we made sure to feed them tiny slugs when they were babies, and it seemed like it worked. If the slugs are too big to...

Man, it's tough to keep up with this fast-moving thread! I grew up in Oklahoma, and my fear of snakes has never really gone away. I know there are no poisonous snakes in Western Washington - it's practically my mantra - but I can't get over the heebee jeebees when I see an evil, slithering...
