Question about chicken behavior during a stalking incident

Isn’t that the truth! Particularly with chickens and children. I stopped planning with my chickens a long time ago. I got them nice nesting boxes, enough for everyone..they bicker over 2 ol 5 gallons buckets! Ever since then, we just play it by ear. And broody hens are so.. unpredictable...

Question about chicken behavior during a stalking incident

Sheryl is a wonderful mama! And she’s a red sex link. Everything I read said RSLs don’t go broody, but she goes broody every spring and beginning of the fall. And just the best mama. Every clutch she’s had, she didn’t wean until they were 5 ish weeks old. Isn’t that on the long side to still...

Question about chicken behavior during a stalking incident

Wow how scary was that?? Even though they were safe, they had to so scared. I imagine it’d be like a bear beating on my door trying to get in. I’d be terrified. Great job Bernie and Babs!! A few weeks ago I had a hawk attack one my little bantam polish hens. I had one rooster herd everyone...

Question about chicken behavior during a stalking incident

I’ve got a flock of 30 hens, 2 primary roosters. They share the same coop, and outside space. This morning a coyote was stalking my chickens (I’ve got all wire mesh fencing and avian netting). It terrified the flock and half ran into the coop and half was in the chicken yard, but up close to the...

    Egg song

Sometimes my girls lay really big eggs. If I was that hen, I’d be screaming too. “Whew I lived! I thought I was gonna die!”

    Egg song

It’s crazy! The hens love my little guy. They have choices, from him being my smallest to my biggest a 15lb jumbo. (And many in between) the ladies prefer Gomez. I watched one of my other roosters buck up on him, and my hens ganged up on the other rooster. Gomez never had to ruffle a feather...

...Gomez the band was decent. Buuut my little dude is name after Gomez Addams. His flock mate is Morticia and their kiddos are Wednesday and Pugsley. ( although I’m pretty positive they belong to 2 other roosters). Both parents are white and the babies are jet black and silver. *who’s gonna tell...

@tlcmurphy do by chance remember the cartoon “the swooner crooner”? It’s was looney tunes I think…one rooster looked like Frank Sinatra, the other Bing Crosby. I swear I have that here.

So he was managing 28 hens. He was running himself crazy. So when (if you remember me talking about it) my leghorn Lilith turned out to be Mooney, he integrated perfectly. I was apprehensive about Gomez and him fighting but it worked out well! I think Gomez needed the help lol.

Poor Gomez nothing. When he was a cockerel he sure wasn’t complaining, he gave my hens a run for their money. Now he’s older and not as..fluent in the language of love..the hens are all up in face. What’s even funnier, he’s a bantam Cochin, the hens are standard size. It’s hysterical!

    Egg song

Ohhhhh I guess that’s what my rooster was doing! I thought he went in to tell them to shut up lol. What he actually said was “ I’m here! For all things holy I’m here! Now please hush!!” And imagine him grumbling under his breath “have to come in here to escort them 5 feet to door.. never get any...

Why are my hens migrating across the coop?

I seriously don’t understand. Before I got into chickens everything I read, everything ppl said was make sure you have space. 10 ft per bird or something. Well I’ve got the space…and they prefer to be all squished. I was thinking well I could use the unused side for feed storage, but you KNOW...

Why are my hens migrating across the coop?

Yes that’s true. There’s always that one hen! For me it’s LuLu. She does sleep on a roost to herself. It’s 5 feet long. One of my pullets jumped up there with her, and I watched Lu side shuffle all the way across the board just to peck the pullet in the head. And I had a broody, a little bantam...

    Egg song

I never understood that. If I was laying eggs, and predators ate the eggs (and myself) I’d lay quietly. Why do they announce it to the world?!
