Do bantams hatch more deformed chicks than standard breeds. I'm hatching banties for the first time and getting problem chicks about one out of six. These are all breed pure and not sibling parents as far as I know. Just wondering if bantams have more problems?
Oops you probably meant hardware cloth around the perimeter. Good idea. I was thinking you meant landscape cloth on the ground. Sorry, I'll shut up and go drink some coffee.
The hardware cloth will be a mess when you go to dig it out for a cleaning. How about digging a trench and leveling some bricks for a "foundation" for your run to sit on.
I put down a layer of paper towels when I hatch quail. Their feet are so small it keeps from mishaps. But with others i like to be able to monitor the humidity trays. My bators are styrofoam and they all clean with sponges. Good luck
Absolutely big enough! They only go in there to sleep and use the nest box. As long as they have a run or outside they will be fine. You can easily get two roosting bars in a 4 x 4 coop. Put the nesting boxes on the outside to save floor space. Good luck
Did you get them on Ebay? You can try to remove the soil with a stiff brush. Some use a sanding card but you have to be really careful. You might ask the seller what they recommend, then let them know that this is not acceptable. I would probably give them a brush and set them any way. Good...
The barred rocks will be a little bigger than the RIR's both will make a nice meat carcass. Be prepared it is NOT going to look like a cornish x rock (the kind you find in the grocery store). I would keep them on a higher protein feed and finish with corn. They the roos will take 16 weeks. They...
Bigstack, thanks that gave me a thought. The only ones I've tried to help were ones that were stuck to the egg, usually a late hatch. I think I will try to mist this egg/ chick if it happens again. Its so easy to tear the umbillical cord, will just give it a mist and leave it alone.
I always put a sponge or two in at this point. Make sure rinse them well if they might come with soap in them. I use a turkey baster to keep the sponges as wet as I can. With baster you can just open one of the windows or lift the corner of your incubater. Good luck,...
? Is it really Okay too...
You will be suprised at at how little there will be. Put some water in the bucket before you start, this will help to keep it from coagulating in the bucket. Pick a favorite tree or bush and give it a dose. For 12 chickens you MIGHT end up with a pint to a quart of blood.
Give a little box with some wood chips or straw in it. if its got a lid and you cut a big hole in the side so much the better. Tuck it some where "safe" and put her in it to show here where it is. If she needs to lay an egg she'll propably go back to it. Much better than to have her start...
Hi Pepper48 this is exactly what I was thinking about. Maybe after having the breeding stock raising several batches thru the year. I would like to hear more about your project as it progresses. This year finds me knee deep in house renovation and I'm doing good to tend the laying flock I...
Has anyone bred bantams to make a meat bird type chicken. I've raised cornish x rocks before but with space limitations this idea has sparked my interest. ?.
I put 25 on a 6 inch pvc drum that is about 12 inches high. I think I got them from McMurray. I run it on my drill press and it works great. More fingers means you can run the bird up and down a little to cover all the surfaces. Good luck
