17wk Welsummer Rooster in SF Bay area

We have a ~17 week old Welsummer rooster that we need to re-home-- he's just started crowing and our landlord isn't keen on us having a rooster on her property. We got him from Alchemist Farms in Sebastopol when he was about 2 weeks old. He's beautiful and healthy, and has a docile personality...

    Adding a pullet...HELP please

The Noodle Farm, we had good luck with setting up a little obstacle course in one corner of our smaller coop, so that the smaller new birds had a place to run, and it slowed down the older established birds. we just nailed a few criss-crossed branches across a croner at different heights, might...

    Integrating

chickenfarmer22 i've had good luck dipping the heads of the new chickens into the drinking water of the current residents, it seems to make them smell familiar and most of the time I haven't had trouble integrating, even with adult hens and pullets

Do you let your chickens out in the rain?

rbd7, I get fine "play sand" from Home Depot, for play ground sand boxes, and mix it with food grade diotomaceous earth and wood ash from our fire place. It's got a little grit and a lot of dust. It keeps them pretty happy and clean!

Under 3 yo hen, hasn't laid in a year...

Peggy's still hasn't produced an egg, and while she seemed to enjoy her bath, we didn't see any changes. She's eating normally and doesn't seem lethargic, the only symptoms are she's got a distended belly and isn't laying any eggs. Wondering if we should take her to the vet nearby...

Hi all! We live in Los Gatos, have had a flock for three years now, moved them from Oakland in November to Los Gatos. Our very first chicken, Pizza, was a red sexlink we found walking down our sidewalk in Oakland! Someone had abandoned a box of chickens at the freeway exit two blocks away, and...

Under 3 yo hen, hasn't laid in a year...

Ok, so we checked her vent on this evening, it's moist and her pelvic bones are further than 2 fingers apart. I did notice her abdomen is distended, though she's been eating fine, very alert. I've been reading about chickens being egg-bound, so am wondering if that's the cause.... I've read some...

Under 3 yo hen, hasn't laid in a year...

thanks aart! I'm pretty confident Peggy's an RIR, we got her from a reputable breeder. See photo attached. The laying hens we have are an Australorp in her first year of laying, so her eggs are very small, and two EEs, so I'm pretty confident Peggy's the one not laying. And the coop is...

Under 3 yo hen, hasn't laid in a year...

I have a RIR, Peggy, who is 2 years, 11 months. Peggy started laying at a regular age, and was a strong, consistent layer with quick molts. A year ago, we integrated some younger pullets into our flock, and Peggy was very aggressive, so we put her in an adjacent cage alone for about two weeks...
