    Worms or undigested rice?

That's so kind of you to offer! I just called the vet that treats my dog. He has told me in the past that he doesn't have the training to treat chickens. Today he said he can do the fecal exam for $12, but would not be able to offer treatment if it's needed. I let him know the chicken experts on...

    Worms or undigested rice?

Yes, my orpington is just coming out of a molt. I believe the poop in question is hers.

    Worms or undigested rice?

It was those segmented pieces that I was worried about too ... they are longer than rice. But now that you mention it, one of them is just coming out of a molt. I'm thinking about doing one of those mail-in worm tests. A year ago you never could have convinced me I would be taking photos of...

    Worms or undigested rice?

I fed my hens a little bit of cooked rice a couple of days ago. The next morning, I freaked out seeing what I thought was worms in the poop when I opened the coop. Then I remembered the rice, and figured that was it. There was still some of this again this morning though. It doesn't really look...

Hawk attack, exposed bone under wing

Sam was alert, eating, and drinking this morning. I got her to a vet who treats chickens. Because of the location of the break and the protruding bone, the best options were amputation of the wing or euthanasia. When I got chickens I thought I could be reasonable about giving first aid myself...

Hawk attack, exposed bone under wing

I got her to take in some dissolved aspirin for pain, but she isn't eating or drinking other than that. I found a couple of vets in my area who will treat chickens, so we'll go that route tomorrow so I can be sure she is getting the correct medication and dosage (if it looks like she has a good...

Hawk attack, exposed bone under wing

This is my first time dealing with a chicken injury, and I'm not as prepared as I thought I would be! At this point I'm glad she is alive. I found her outside with the hawk standing on her. She was on her side lifeless when I chased the hawk away, and I thought she was dead or close to it. I put...

Will do. Thanks for all of the work you have put into this! I'll tell my girls it's all your fault when I get stingy with their hemp. :-)

    Has anyone tried Chicken Chew?

It is available on amazon, but not with free/prime shipping. The owners of the company are members of our local backyard chicken Facebook group, and they have mentioned they are working on bringing in investors to help with bulk pricing and shipping prices.

    Myurbancoop.com ... You pay shipping.

    Has anyone tried Chicken Chew?

I think there is a pound of hemp seed in every 7-lb bag ... I looked up prices just for hemp seed, so the price for a bag of the feed is pretty good considering the price of hemp seeds alone. I actually e-mailed the company earlier today to find out whether there are options for local pickup...

    Has anyone tried Chicken Chew?

We tried the free samples too. My hippy chicks loved the hemp version, go figure. :-) I probably would not give it as their only feed ($$$), but I might feed it as a supplement (because they loved it so much) if I could buy it locally and avoid shipping charges.

They won't roost in the coop :(

I have the same coop. The roost is just barely higher than the tray and nesting boxes, so I made a higher, removable roost from 2x4s. It's oriented the opposite direction from the original roosts, so all three of my girls can fit on it.

Need a better hidey-hole for chicks' food. Ideas?

Maybe try a small version of the bucket feeder with PVC elbow access? The bigger birds won't be able to reach the food.

Chickens in cities with chicken ban

SB 1620 passed in the Texas Senate, but died in committee in the House. It was not signed into law. Sorry to be a party pooper, but I don't want to you to move forward under the impression that you (and your chickens) are protected.
