Fresh eggs dont pass the float test

We do occasionally find eggs not laid in the boxes. They usually aren’t more than a few days old. I was wondering that perhaps those are getting contaminated somehow. Or maybe it’s because I collect eggs every other day instead of daily.

Fresh eggs dont pass the float test

Every once in a while we get a “fresh” egg from our flock that wont pass the float test. We started testing because i had one several months ago that was clearly bad when i went to fry it. This only happens periodically. We had three today and the last time was over a m9nth ago. Any ideas what...

Help... hen weak and falling over!

Thats what I was thinking. We were on the tail end of a brutal cold snap where we barely broke into the single digits during the day and - 10 at night. I am leaning towards that she is elderly and her age and the cold was too much for her.

Help... hen weak and falling over!

I have a 5 year old Leghorn hen. Last week she started looking unwell by pulling her head into her shoulders, tail down and comb falling over. On Sunday I found her laying on her side in the snow. She does not appear to be injured. I brought her in the house and have been trying to hydrate and...

Hey Northerners: What is the absolute coldest air temps your chickens have experienced happily!

The old temperature gauge tonight said - 22 F. Blek. I normally do NOT provide supplemental heat but before the deep freeze hit i nailed up another layer of plywood over the sides and put up 2 of the big brooder heat lamps. Outside -22, inside the coop 10 F. And its dry, thank god. My Speckled...

    Coop placement

I agree.... less sun more protected. A shady coop is nice in the summer and it will help with drafts in the winter.

Just got the wood stove stoked and waiting for it to get get nice and hot because it is a balmy 1 F this morning. I resisted the urge to put the heat lamp in the coop. The girls appear to be OK.

I love mine because I can get it cranked up to 400 F and the top of the stove has a flat top for putting things... like...

    Drainge issues

A rain gutter would help divert water that comes off the roof away from the coop. My other suggestions would be to make a few drainage ditches filled with gravel to direct water away and to add sand to the floor of your coop. It drains well and doesn't turn into muck

    My first egg!

Congrats on your first egg! Production does slow down significantly in the winter. You can help pick it up a bit by giving then supplemental lighting. Welcome to BYC from Wisconsin
