Chickens not roosting in the coop

yes higher than nesting boxes, its about 3' high off the floor at its highest point. I'm putting in a new one that is longer and higher based on what I have read here and in other groups about it needing to be higher so their heads are 12-18" from the ceiling. my girls are quite large, my...

Chickens not roosting in the coop

No not new, its been their coop for a few months now, and until the cold came they were sleeping on the roost. I will let it go for now, we are putting in a new roosting bar this weekend.

Chickens not roosting in the coop

I have tried moving them. so I guess the better question is, is there any reason not to let them snuggle in the boxes? Personally I don't care about the clean up aspect and they aren't laying sooo...no harm no foul? pun intended LOL

Chickens not roosting in the coop

that was my first coop (aka crappy), I have since had a 8x10 coop and 10x16run built. I will see if I can get a picture of the inside tonight when I get home. Pictures of outside to come...

Chickens not roosting in the coop

My nesting boxes actually protrude out from the front of my coop, also weird they choose there to sleep, my new roost will be the 2" up of the 2x4 and I plan to add a ladder to get up to it with a "shelf" area. maybe once I do that they will "move on up". I will also add a few vents because...

Chickens not roosting in the coop

so no drafts and it has plenty of ventilation, they were roosting before the cold weather came. I am putting in a new roosting bar this weekend so we will see if that helps. But I honestly think they just like it. I have 4 hens and the coop is 80sf so its plenty big for them.

Chickens not roosting in the coop

so my chickens (2 Blue Chochin, 2 Speckled Sussex) are about 9-10 months old, now that it has gotten colder (12 degrees in coop last night) they are sleeping in the nesting boxes. Is this a big deal? They stopped laying completely about a week ago, I have 8 nesting boxes. The roosting bar is...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Once feathered, temperature is no longer much of a threat as long as they can access shelter that protects from wind. Is it terrible that I am terrified they won't be warm enough? I guess I need to think of them as outside animals than "baby chicks". They are pretty much feathered out, they...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

What does the outside temp need to be at night and during the day for these girls to move outside? I live in Utah and our temps are still getting down to mid 30's at night and anywhere from mid 40's to upper 60's during the day. Although today is damp. I'd have to run an extension cord about...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So I got my chicks today from IFA! They are about 3 or 4 weeks old, I thought that might be easier for me since I work full time. I have the next 4 days off to tend to them. Any suggestions on handling them? As you can see I am using the MHP and 2 are in and 2 are out.[/IMG][/IMG]

    hello from Utah

I was looking at Cochins and Speckled Sussex. But open to other cold hardy suggestions.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Your right I could, but hubby said he didn't want to do that. We both work full time and he just isn't up for a project for "my animals". I guess I will see how this one works out and go from there. on another note, how often do the chicks need to be checked on? I have seen some posts that say...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

ok thank you! I do plan on letting them free range in a large area of my yard so I think my run will only be for those times they can't be outside. Plus I have already drawn up alterations for the coop and the runs.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So my coop says it is large enough for 6 chickens. Do you have another suggestion for especially cold hardy chickens? I was also thinking Jersey Giants, Easter Eggers or Wyandotte's. I had planned to order 3 chicks of two different breeds, just for some variation.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

The coop will be predator proofed before any chickens go out into it. I also have 3 dogs and a cat so this is a must, even though the area where the coop will be fenced off will additional fencing. I can run an extension cord out to the coop, I am also thinking of having an electrician out to...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I am thinking about ordering my chicks today here in Utah, they said it would be about 2 weeks for them to arrive. I ordered my coop on Sunday and it takes 2 weeks as well. How long do the chicks need to stay "inside"? I am ordering 3 Cochins (hopefully blue) and 3 Sussex (hoping these are...

    hello from Utah

I am new to the site and wanted to just say hello. We moved to Utah last June and I have finally talked my husband into letting me get chickens. I had them growing up in Northern Virginia but this will be the first time I have had "my own". Fortunately my mother lives with us and can help with...
