    I got my first egg last Friday, nearly 19 weeks old and it came from one of my smaller hens who I think is a leghorn (meyer hatchery-hatcher's choice). Although they are small eggs she's laid 3 in 4 days! Waiting for the other 10 to kick it in to gear.

    My chicks are now 6+ weeks old. Had 65 degree temps yesterday so I put together a temporary run and let them spend some time in the sun! Unsure of things at the beginning but they enjoyed it. [/IMG][/IMG]

    Thanks for the thoughts. I have 11 and I turned off the lamp today (it's 65 outside). I like the idea of breaking them in with cooler temps, although the high tomorrow is 32!....this weekend its supposed to be 50ish.     I'm in the mental planning stage of building my first coop, chicks are three weeks old and in the brooder in the garage. I'm planning on building a 'sand box' under the coop for them to dust in and use as their supply of grit

    You might get some Sav-A-Chik to have on hand. Electrolytes supplement to help them in times of stress. Add it to the water and let it do it's stuff. It helped mine perk up after their initial transit.

    Great to hear this! Didn't know if they had a bitter taste to them or not. Now I am kind of looking forward to the green pests coming this spring. Might even tell my neighbor to bring his over. Wonder if I could put them in a ziploc and stick them in the freezer for a winter snack?? Hmmm...

    Anyone have experience with this? I have flowering trees that these beatles love to eat and I would love to be able to feed them to my chickens (my first year having chickens). Will the chickens eat them? Just curious....

    Quick question regarding feed> Walking through the local store I see feed with 16%crumble, 20%crumble etc. What do they mean by that? Is that the percentage of the food that has been crumbled into a very fine consistency? Thanks!

    Thanks for the warm welcome and advice. I'm starting small so maybe 6-7 chickens at the beginning. Thinking of getting a mixture of Buff Orphington, RIR, Easter Eggers or Barred Rock. Also have Americaunas for sale locally so I might check those out too.
