No problem, thanks for the advice. I will bring the chick in and do my best. At least if it dies it won't die alone. Thanks again~Lara

    Omphalitis?

One of my hens disappeared and when she returned had seven chicks with her! I still haven't found her nest! One of the chicks is much smaller than the other, lays around and doesn't move much, only in small spurts. It's belly button looks crusted and it jerks it's head sporadically...

    Hen abandoned eggs-

Ita that we have to go with our own experience, I wasn't meaning it to be snarky! No hatching yet. I am thinking perhaps she kicked them out from under her because she knew that they weren't viable?

    Hen abandoned eggs-

Quote: I doubt it's a myth considering Gail Damerow & others note these things in their highly published books. They also say if you are going to wash them and destroy the bloom to use a 1% bleach solution so that you kill the bacteria as well. I am thinking that the bleach you use in your...

    Hen abandoned eggs-

Sorry, I don't mean to sound cruel, just practical. There's a wide range of attitudes towards chickens here, from pure livestock to pure pets, and all places inbetween. Personally, although I care a lot about and for my chickens, I don't have time/energy/resources to coddle abandoned eggs to...

    Hen abandoned eggs-

Quote: Really? Then why have I heard that if a hatching egg is dirty while developing, you shouldn't wash it with water? Thanks! Because washing it destroy the "bloom," that protects the egg. It's a barrier that is wet when an egg is first laid and dries very quickly to protects the egg from...

    Hen abandoned eggs-

Thanks! I guess I will wait and see what happens! I am concerned that they won't hatch now that they have been moved, candled a second time and they are past day 18. I know that chicks spend a great deal of time the last three days orienting themselves. Will they need "help" to pip, or would...

    Hen abandoned eggs-

My hen hatched two eggs (one on the 2nd and the 3rd) and then abandoned the other two yesterday. I just candled them on wednesday and they appeared to be viable, what should I do?

Very basic question on fertilized eggs--

On wednesday we got rid of one of our roos, would my hens still be laying eggs that might have been fertilized by him? I am wondering how long it takes for them to work it out of their system! Thanks in advance

Just checked on him and he is doing great! Washed him last night with Dove bar soap and now that he is dry there is little to no stickyness.

    Sprained toe?

The rooster that I brought inside (the one caught in the fly trap) has a swollen toe on his left foot. It's a nice big knot and the whole foot is much hotter than the other so I suspect it's running a little fever. Do I just treat this the same way I would a sprain of my own? Please let me know...

    fly tape stuck to cockerel!

Thanks for all of the replies. I am going to powder him down with corn starch or baking soda on the sticky side and see if he worries it off without problems. If not I am not sure what to do. He is molting and it is all nice feathery down right now. I'll update on this one soon!
