All things considered, and her age, you may get away w it, but she would certainly be very lonely in her last days. I have a rescued silky who was always a lone chicken and now won't bond w my flock of RIRs, but spends her time following my maltese dogs everywhere.
Set it up in it's own brooder, easiest w a tub, cut a side hole and screw in some hardware cloth, and pop a light in the top w another hole. Chick feed, etc and you'll be fine. Just slowly introduce it in 30 days.
I'm just in tears knowing how preventable and senseless it was, and her mate is guarding the pool, but won't swim💔. We spent literally thousands to build solid double fences around the property w extra roofing, fences, and double gated enclosures bc the neighbors used to bring their kids over in...
I found an empty EXPIRED PEANUT BUTTER JAR almost buried in the hay by her corner 😭, w the heat and damp, I believe your guess of botulism was right. My neighbors are terrible about chucking things over the fence to the critters that they feel are harmless, and repeated conversations not to...
It depends on the rain or algae growth, but I don't like it yucky. Everyone uses it for additional drinking water, so I make sure I can see the blue of the pool. Once it's murky, I change it.
We've had rain for weeks, but my ducks have been able to hang out in a dry coop, exterior covered run, and an outer fenced yard w a pool (it was cleaned and filled yesterday). Today I let everyone out and they were fine. I watched my 18 mo old adult f Pekin hop into the pool w her mate to...
Right, I have a chicken dog that I trust w most of my chickens, not all. I would never set her loose w my frizzles or silkies, or anyone else's chickens.
Great to see she's doing better. You're doing everything right. I give mine a powdered calcium/d, niacinamide, w a liquid magnesium in their water once a month. I list a sweet hen last year w lash eggs, and egg bound problems that never resolved. The new mix prevents the mineral issues w...
I gotta say that it's bc of all the great advice and plans that we've seen on here that helped us plan our bird coops, runs, and yards. We've been super fortunate to be able to learn from everyone here. I have a brooder in the coop ( who'd have thought?!), self contained quarantine coop...
LMAO, sounds like my husband and I. He gets annoyed and tells me to 'blame the owner, not the animal, but it's the DOG or chickens that're in my yard destroying fences, gardens, charging my pups and ducks, and I'm going to go after the animal....then the owner. I've lost over $1k this year in...
I went on a feed run and left him alone w the air compressor. I came home to this. And he is putting up the wood fence to keep out neighbors, their dogs, and their children...lol. It went up so fast!
After going out to find my run tarp destroyed by the Tx wind for the THIRD TIME this year, we decided to go for a corrugated metal. Since we were upgrading, we also reinforced the entire structure.
Just for future reference, this stuff is like GOLD. Works wonders on respiratory and what I call 'general puny chicken issues'. Everything breathing, sinus, beak related.
I am currently building a VERY EXPENSIVE solid wood fence bc my neighbor refuses to keep her pack of dogs in her yard, even after we built her a fence and gave her a new gate!! I've already been attacked TWICE, and I've found another neighbor's injured and dead chickens all over my yard. This...
Swollen head syndrome can begin with an eye and is very contagious. Has the coop been excessively damp, anybody chocking or coughing, or eye bubbling? Swollen head is a respiratory issue (like sinus infection gone crazy), so keep an eye out for any symptoms along those lines.
Yes, she's my only chick, I hatched her 3 wks ago. Mom's fine, except she's had a bald back since I got her a couple of months ago. She's in the middle of the pecking order here, but was last in the old flock. Chick seems annoyed more than anything.... with me 🤣, but seems stronger today...
