Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Well, we had a couple of our older hens decide to start laying again last week, and in the last week, we've managed to get 9 eggs, so I'm egg-cited! (Sorry) Of those 9 eggs, I can pretty much determine the layer of each, except one. It was HUGE! So I really don't know if someone was just...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Ooooh! Thanks, Spike! I've got to run to the grocery store tomorrow, so I'll take that list with me and see if we can't boost them up some. :-)

We tried Cayenne Cornbread. Nothing. Boo! Maybe we're just due for another round since the days are getting longer, we'll be warm, and even my horses have started an early shed of winter coats.

    Delawares or Red Sex Links?

Here's the baby with the best saddle feathers. He, surprisingly, was the last to get fully feathered. He was in the house for at least a week after almost everyone else moved out to the barn...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Oh! And my production reds were giving me an egg every other day (each) before they started molting, but they're also aged, probably 2+ years. They were given to me by someone who rarely keeps chickens past the 18 month molt.

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Honestly, my surprise boys are so entertaining that the plan is to keep them until they indicate otherwise. Maybe some testosterone will jump start the older girls into laying again? If not, then I've got no issues with them being decoys "in case of predators". They're pretty for sure, but from...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Count me in. As of now, I have 2 production reds and one game hen that are molting (and we have a really hard time finding the game hens eggs anyway--every day is Easter with her), 1 9 month old rock hen that still has yet to lay, another game hen that seems to have gone dormant for the winter...

    Delawares or Red Sex Links?

Pretty! Yeah, that's why I've given up on the RIRs. 2 of the 3 have gotten some pretty dramatic saddle feathers, and all 3 have pointy hackle feathers, and they should be about 7 months or so. Of the babies, it's kind of hard to see saddle feathers because of all the white, but the hackle...

Post Your Game Cam Pics Here!!!

Love this thread! There are so many "Oh, HI!" pics! We just replaced our game cam after it was broken in the move, and still waiting to find anything interesting on it. So far, the closest to interesting was the cat looking for an ideal spot to climb up to his nightly perch atop the pen...

    Delawares or Red Sex Links?

That's what I like to hear! Thank you so much! I've really been keeping my fingers crossed about that one. I've gotten really attached to her and have been hoping for an excuse to keep her. I picked her out at a week old, and still like her just as much now...lol. So if they're not red sex...

    Delawares or Red Sex Links?

Thank you! I started to get really suspicious when I found random brown feathers on a few chicks. So, if we find a hen, it will be an egger only! So, now I guess the question is whether or not the one that I hope is a pullet really is....

    Delawares or Red Sex Links?

...photos at about 3 months (taken today): And this is the same one in the first pic above: If we did in fact get Delawares, and we *may* have a hen or 2, what would I look for in a breeding pair? The second pic from today is my favorite and I hopehopehope that it's a hen, but I'm...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

I just wanted to update to say that the aggressive 5 have been rehomed, and I haven't gotten a call screaming for me to take the jerks back, so I'm happy...lol. Only one has stepped up to be the head honcho, and I'm OK with that too. I'm about to go get some new pics of them to post in breed...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

Ah, OK. Thanks! Oh yeah. If we managed to get $2 each for them, we will have made a profit...lol. Roosters usually go for $8-10 in this area, so if we wait a few more weeks, then we'll be happy. I also know of someone who is willing to trade a couple of hens for some, which is a-OK with me...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

No reason to be sorry! Around here, you can usually sell them, although they don't go for as much as hens do, I guess for the same reason that I've already got that one person interested and why I wanted to keep a roo back for myself--flock protection. I know of several people around here who...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

Gotcha! Again, learning soooooooo much! Haha, as much as I hope we don't have a whole lot of roos, given what he paid, we can still sell them for a pretty large profit, although I would have loved to have had a hen or 2 for eggs. We have 8 hens and no eggs right now. 2 are molting, 1 is 9...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

Here are some pictures of the difference in combs. The 2 that I got were the most drastic big/small. Maybe seeing them can help determine if it means anything or not. The first is my favorite, suspected female. The second is one of the separated ones. Sorry about the quality. Phones don't...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

OK, so I'm extremely new to chickens, so some of your language is a little foreign to me, like "straight run" and the reference to packing peanuts? Lol, sorry. I guess packing peanuts would be like stocking stuffers? A filler to make numbers? And red sex link roosters? The only thing that I...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

Yes. We got 18, but one had a crossed beak and didn't make it, so we're down to 17, split into 3 cages. Good idea on letting them burn off energy. I think I'll try rotations today in the big girls' pen today since our weather is going to be crappy. And I do think I might start trying to...

Holy sudden surge of hormones Batman!

So my husband got an offer that he couldn't refuse and came home with 18 roughly week old chicks that we think are probably Delawares. We've had them for about a month now, and all has been calm and quiet. As they've aged, we've split them up into different cages for more room until our big...
