That's good news! Thanks for the new info about first year hens not being light dependent.

Supplement with a light or wait until Spring?

3 hens are 25 weeks old and no eggs yet. BR, EE, Welsummer. We are in the Bay Area and daylight lasting just under 12 hours now. Is it better to let them mature naturally and get eggs in the spring? Will I just get little eggs now if it is more light they need? Thanks!

    Corrugated Plastic Roof?

I will post some to you when I get home from work. We used corrugated metal on part of the run closest to coop house, corrugated plastic in the next section , and hog wire roofing on the end section furthest from coop house. Metal provides shade, plastic allows sun with reduced intensity, and...

The Big Fat Is This A Rooster? Thread

Raven started to crow about a week ago. Wren the welsummer is not crowing and plumage has not headed toward roosterish so I do believe she is a hen.

    Protecting from hawks?

Following up to the my post about using the umbrellas with eyes...It worked until yesterday twilight. No chickens lost , but the biggest hawk I ever saw landed in the yard when the chickens were out. They dove for cover and I ran toward he hawk and he did take off. However, he flew back and...

    Protecting from hawks?

I am hoping my adultish kids' old ikea umbrellas will provide a little shelter while chickens are free ranging for short periods. Perhaps the eyes on the umbrellas will scare the hawks too?

    Swing in the run

Repurposed the kids' Ikea hand swing/hangy thing. I wedged a log into the handle portions and hung it above the pop door ramp. They like to jump from the ramp and gently swing. Just put it up yesterday and they got on it within a couple of hours. Chicks are 5 weeks old. I saw the same two...

    Non-plastic waterer

Well, you have given me an idea. I can try the galvanized bucket for everyday use and have the closed bucket with nipples if we go away for the weekend. Thanks!

    Non-plastic waterer

Has anyone used this galvanized bucket waterer? What did the old timers use to water their chickens? I would like to avoid keeping the water in any kind of plastic. http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Feeders-and-Waterers/Bucket-Waterer-1-Gallon-p1558.aspx Thanks!

    aggressive vs. pecking order?

The brooder box is a large outdoor Rubbermaid toy/storage box. I have a roost and a block of wood and have tried other items...piece of cardboard with marker specks on it, hanging leaf of lettuce which they thought was an eagle. I will add a dust bath today and get that coop finished this...

    aggressive vs. pecking order?

I ordered and picked up 3 chicks 2 weeks ago (BA, BR, Welsummer). They were a day old or nearly. The next day, I went to a different feed store to get an EE to complete my 4 hen plan. The feed store only had EEs that were 1 1/2 week old and it was crowded conditions for the chicks. As I...
