So she is still with us and seems to be doing allright. Fed her some warm mash which she gobbled out of the bowl. She is drinking on her own. But, when she scratches and pecks at kernels on the ground, her beak does not close around them. It is almost like she can't really see what she is...
Yesterday something attacked my hens in broad daylight, killing one and wounding another. The dead hen's body was intact, but the head and neck had been nibbled clean, kinda like an ear of corn.....(racoon or weasel?). The wounded bird is doing allright, she is taking yogurt with vitamins, I...
I have three Buff Orpingtons and three Barred Rocks that we got in early April. Friends got barred rocks and another type of chicken AFTER we got ours and they are laying and have big red combs. Our girls are not laying, not squatting, have tiny combs.....they get Layena laying pellets mostly...
I kept her in the coop today and she downed some yogurt and has ACV in her water. She also took some olive oil. Now her crop feels squishy with a few "grainy" things inside. She is really panting, it is hot as heck here, and humid. I have read all the posts about impacted crops and such and...
Checked her this morning, and her crop is smaller, but not empty. It is hard at the bottom, and I can feel some crunchy bits in there. I closed her up in the coop again and gave some yogurt and ACV in her water. We are out of olive oil, but I will go get some. No smell or anything. Any...
Hi all,
My name is Xenia and I live in North Carolina. I got three older Buff Orpingtons from a friend two years ago for my daycare kids to take care of, and now have expanded the flock. After some terrible Racoon attacks and two deaths, we seem to have figured things out and life is good...
I posted earlier this morning about my hen feeling a bit off. I have checked her crop compared to those of her yard-mates, and hers is full but still squishy. I can feel individual kernels and things in there. I would say larger than a golf ball but smaller than a softball.....any advice? I...
She has been with the youngers for probably two months now, we raised them from chicks which came from the feed store. Kept them all separate until the chicks were feathered-out.
I agree that she may be getting old, but it seems funny to me that she should be acting so differently from one day...
Hi all,
My 5yo (?) Buff Orpington is acting differently. Usually she "crows" in the coop until I come let her (and her 7 coop-mates) out, but for the past two mornings, she has made little to no noise. She seems listless, though she is drinking and pecking at food.
They have been fed Purina...
She died. We were able to slaughter her before she stopped breathing, and will honor her life by making her the star of a very tasty dish. There was something very wrong with her crop/neck/ throat. She could not swallow and ended up with thick mucuos in her mouth, struggling for breath. Thanks...
Feed store out of antibiotics, but will have them in tomorrow. Have aspirin and vitamin/electrolyte mix for her water. No eating yet. I will keep you posted.
Thanks JJ. What are the doses of aspirin to give her? Baby aspirin I know, just not how much. Will try some egg. She has left her favorite food - strawberries - just lying beside her. Maybe I will try some banana. It may sound harsh, but I cannot take her to a vet. We do have one around...
I have been scanning past posts for similar incidents and have pieced some information together, but have a few specific questions. A racoon got into our coop two nights ago, grabbed one of the orpingtons by the head and tried to drag her up a tree. We surprised the coon who dropped the bird...
Hi everybody, I am new to having chickens and am finding the info on this site truly helpful. I have a mix of Buff Orpingtons and some mutt banty/silky combination that a neighbor gave me. Having some coon probkems, which is what brought me to this site originally.
