My broody hen hatched two eggs, what’s next.

UPDATE: Mom and chicks are doing great. Two of the four eggs hatched. One looks like a.black Barred Rock female. The other I’m not sure. The rooster is a Salmon Faveroilles and both chicks have five toes and feathered feet. Thanks for all your insight.

My broody hen hatched two eggs, what’s next.

This is so different from raising my first chicks I bought from TSC and having to use the heat lamp. I have a way of over-thinking situations instead of going with the flow.

My broody hen hatched two eggs, what’s next.

Thanks. I have hens that are curious and keep going to the crate. I assume mom will keep the curious away.

My broody hen hatched two eggs, what’s next.

My Buff Orpington was sitting on four eggs in an elevated nest box. I was able to move her to a metal dog crate before two hatched yesterday. There are two more she is sitting on. The only spot I could put the crate is on a shelf in the run. I’m unsure what to do not. She will need to come...

    Hen broke her top beak!

Thanks everyone for such encouraging replies. Shirley seems to be doing quite well eating her crumbles. She seems to always be at the feeder but is going to roost with a full crop. Hopefully it continues.

    Hen broke her top beak!

My RIR appears to have broke off her top beak at the lip. Her lower beak is intact and she tries to eat and drink. I feed my chickens pellets from two feeders. I switched one to have crumbles available for her. Don’t know what else can be done right now except to monitor her. Will she grow back...

You would have done what different with your coup?

Welcome to BYC. I have wood boards that are removable for cleaning the coop. There is a rubberized garage floor pad on top that I spread pine shavings to aid in cleaning the droppings. I clean the droppings every other day. Once a month I pull the mat and can fold it to dump into a bucket and...

    Double yolk huge egg

I have a 1 year old Blue Sapphire that regularly lays 2.5 ounce eggs or larger. When she first started some were double yolks but now just single yolks. She did lay a triple yolk once. HUGE!! I use that as my avatar.

A little help here please - pullets molting!

Their coop is 6x8 with an 8x14 enclosed run. I let them out to roam about 5-6 hour a day. No rooster. I’ve talked with other chicken owners near me and some tell me they had pullets lose feathers at this age although not a complete molt. Others say no feather loss. Leave it to my girls to...

Thanks for the encouraging words. I’m glad they know, cause I sure don’t. I’m learning fast tho. :idunno

A little help here please - pullets molting!

I have six 40 week old pullets that appear to be molting. This is my first time raising chickens. I didn't think pullets this young would go thru a molt but three have lost their tail feathers and some of their downy butt fluff. I’m more concerned with my SLW who is now losing feathers around...

    Metal corrugated roof! Ugh...

I’m just north of you between Flint and Saginaw. When my hubby build our coop I was concerned with our seasonal temperatures and how to keep my birds from frying in the summer yet not freezing in the winter. Our coop has a metal roof also. He put Up OSB board topped with pink insulating...

Why did my chicken lay an egg in my run???

I have found eggs in the run, on the floor of their coop and in the grass outside their run. Wherever they are when the mood hits. Is this her first egg? Hard to say.

35 Week Leghorn Hen: Still No Laying

With daylight getting shorter I’m not looking for eggs from myBL until spring and that’s okay. Unless it’s a matter of funds you might consider giving her until Spring before deciding to make a decision on what to do with her. I’ve become attached to my girls and will keep her regardless. One...

35 Week Leghorn Hen: Still No Laying

My 36 wk Brown Leghorn has yet to lay an egg. The other five all lat brown eggs so I’ll know when she blesses us with her gift. She seems content to be my freeloader. Ruthie is also on the bottom of the pecking order. Don’t know if that factors in .
