We grow these in Virginia Beach and love them. The foliage is lovely, evergreen and beautiful today in the snow, the flowers are outrageous and the fruit is absolutely drop-dead delicious. You can eat the outer (pink) petals, which have a cotton-candy flavor and the stamens/pistil in the...
You haven't had a good laugh until you throw a mess of leftover cooked linguini into the chicken run. They LOVE it - one will grab a strand and run like a maniac with the noodle flapping behind them and the others in hot pursuit. We've gotten so amused that we now routinely cook more noodles...
FoulFowl - Will a peahen create a nest if she's in a large pen with others? What do I need to supply so that she can feel she has a "safe" place? Would she go into a dog igloo, under a table or into a large pile of hay?
Wish you were closer to Virginia.
I'm thinking of re-homing my pair of peafowl --both very tame and delightful but we're downsizing our entire operation and if they nest, which is coming up, we'd need larger/more pen(s) and that's just not happening. I love them dearly and would love to have...
OOOhhhhh, beautiful! I wish our Diva, "Q" was that lovely! And that's just what it's doing. I really hope that it is a girl.
At what age will they begin laying eggs? And what kind of shelter/nest should I provide for her? She seems interested in the chickens' nest boxes but no interest...
Most of our Florida fig growers had only one problem - nematodes. If so, you might have to go with a large pot and then I'd always suggest Celeste! (My fave.) PS Poultry LOVE figs and they are very rich in calcium, so I figure they are good food for egg layers!
heading out before the rain...
I'll try. If I go out with a camera, I swear everyone just plays dead. Let me go out with hands full of other stuff - everyone shows off. I have photos from earlier this year on my little blog - www.usefulgardens.com - but, of course, none of this fanning is going on!
I have what I thought was a pair of peafowl. The blue male is a definite (and a beauty). I thought the 1.5 year old pied was a female, like the mother of them both, but twice now I've found "her" with tail fanned up, shaking it at our hens, just like the male does. No nest or eggs to protect...
My four peacocks flew away the very first time I let them out to roam, after having them for a month or so here at our farm in Virginia Beach. I was heartbroken. Neighboring farms were put on alert and I'd get bulletins - "They are on Foster's barn!" "They were in my dad's yard this...
How about the Gloucester Chicken Swap at the Tractor Supply Store? Dates: April 14 and May 12 - more dates on the petchickensofvirginia.org site! Lots of folks and chickens, ducks, geese, guineas and general insanity. Fun!
Oh your place looks PERFECT for peafowl! Our farm only has trees of any kind in one corner and a few too small ones along a ditch line. Everything else is open fields! They seem to LOVE walking on grass among trees and that's where they seem to be in all the documentaries. Ours were rescues...
Hi, Zazouse, how cold do you get out there in SW Texas? Do you get into the teens?
I'm more worried because of our N'oreasters - we're not far in from the ocean here and the winter ice storms coming off the ocean can be severe and they generally last for three days of solid bad weather. There...
I'm in the same boat.
My pair of peafowl freerange with the chickens during the day and roost in tall trees near the chicken pen at night. Unfortunately, their roost is in a small copse of trees surrounded by open fields and the trees are deciduous, so the peas have no real cover at all up...
His proud mama thinks so! He is a true sweetheart, too. He lets the little chicks bound around him and very, very carefully steps over them. He spent hours watching the mamas on the nests, almost like a protector and seems to feel some ownership of the baby banties. He's never pecked at any...
Thank you both for sharing your experiences with me. I think I'm ready to let them free and hope for the best. Like you, I think they will be much happier overall. what's your experience with weather? FLOrange00, have yours weathered any hurricanes? Fowler, do you get serious cold/snow...
I am hoping to get some insights, ideas and experiences from the folks here who have shared such great info on peafowl. I have a pair of peafowl that were given to us. I'm concerned about making sure they are safe and secure but also happy and healthy. If this gets long, please bear with me...
We lured ours back when they were lost by playing peacock calls through the laptop speakers (downloaded from youtube, amazingly enough) and by placing a mirror in the temporary pen we used to corral them. They can't resist reflections and will immediately approach a mirror. If you have a way...
Had to share this recent post from the blog Tales from the Coop Keeper. Jayme just cracked me up with her hilarious appeal for Chicken Sponsors.
Enjoy!
