This year I have more hens molting than previous years, and there are feathers everywhere! I try to keep them picked up, but I am not getting them all! Is it okay to let the feathers stay in their run? I have heard that feathers in a run can attract lice/mites ..is this true? East Tennessee

She is 35 months old, it will be her 3rd molt since I have had her , she usually molts around September, but this summer was extremely hot humid, I’m thinking stress related molt from the heat
No… she is the Queen Chicken in the pecking order, and sadly she is the one who plucks and eats flock mate feathers … when I picked her up last night to check for lice/mites, she flapped her wings and feathers went everywhere lol
What’s crazy is, her bottom feathers are coming out like crazy, I checked her vent and around the area for lice or nits and saw nothing! I thought a molt typically starts at the head?
What do you do, when only one hen is starting a molt, and the others are not, how do you feed for the one molting and make sure the active layers are getting the nutrition they need?
