Where in Western Kentucky are you?
My hubby and I should be moving in a month or so to just south of Lexington and we are able to have chickens there.
I would be extremely interested.
...we need to keep up nutrition levels and that includes water.
:)
Is your water purified/filtered? Perhaps there is a mineral also in the water their little bodies are craving more in super cold temps., and drinking bunches of water is satisfying that supplement need? *just a side thought* :)
Not sure I did this correctly before.
Try to post from android- ha!
MightyMaran ,

Hello there, you are probably the closest to me that is in possession of Black Copper Marans! And either thus spring or later this year I will be ready to raise some chicks or pullets. Will you be trying to sell chicks or buckets for breeding from your Maran hens?
I'm down in Ky and pretty far...
I've been involved for years protesting BIG Corporate style government and government corporatism, via Libertarian Party voting as well as recently Occupy Movement. In addition, I really respect the Free State Project up in NH. :)
I'm for the people, their right to choose without deceitful...
Awe :) That all sounds great!
Wish I could say the same, but the opportunity for us to move and get the house we were looking at has basically stopped. So we will not be able to raise chickens anytime soon.
What else about the cloth would you recommend is safest, toxicity wise, regarding the chickens? Our friend will be living there too and eventually would like a dog and in a year or more I hope to have a few milk goats.

Since I'm still new and all, I decided to look up Black Copper Marans. What are they?
I just found out a boatload of great info and they are hard to find.
Here is a link that got me started in learning and hope you can find something close by. Not sure if a pure breed french standard is...
I see the use of hardware cloth a lot in these posts. What is the best kind to get. I'm thinking this out, by the time we move into the house and start designing how we will best utilize the space in our back yard for the coop... I am ready to build a fort knox for the hens before I order them...
Hmmm interesting to know and note.
For removal, and I'm just responding after reading the first post... Tea Tree Oil from Melaleuca in their strongest compound, will dissolve this easily. And NOT harm the chicken, plus it's anti-fungal, anti-bacteria, etc.
To whomever reads this and experiments with successful winter egg laying chicken breeds:
Which breed is the most successful at continuing daily egg laying during the winter with artificial light provided?
Thank you
:)
I hope I am not misusing this thread, but I have a question for you all.
Talking to someone today about the pullets I'd like to start off with this summer/fall and he mentioned a molting period for pullets before feeding them or preparing them to be egg layers.
What is he talking about...
Was there a logical reason as to why they won't do ducks? I'm really curious!
Wouldn't know where to start in helping you find an answer to your query. :(
Thank you, that is a little far to drive right now when I do not have the place yet to raise them.
Please let me know about the next one?
Thanks again!
:)
Where is everyone else from?
Tried to go through the thread from the beginning before I noticed most people in the first 15 pages are from everywhere else but South Western Ohio! :)
I am originally from Sidney, Ohio and am fairly familiar with the Eastern side of the state on down to Cincy and...
