OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

You could always call the "Turtle Man" lol!!! To keep snakes away from my coop I make sure the grass all around is mowed short, tougher to hide that way. I also make sure every hole is plugged up in the hen house. When we had chicks when I lived on a farm years ago my grand dad would put a layer of rabbit wire over the chicken wire from
The ground up to deter snakes.

Yes, we keep the grass mowed short around the house and the barns. Thank you for the input. :)

I've also been told that Guienea hens and pea fowl keep snakes away. I do know that Buckeyes ( the chicken not the nut) are great mousers

True on that guinea statement! Mine have eliminated every snake on the farm - even those that use to wander into my pond. The guineas that you have, the braver they seem to be. When I had 7 they only took care of bugs, but with 15 they are great for warning about hawks, killing snakes and announcing anything strange on the property. I highly recommend them!

Hello there, you are probably the closest to me that is in possession of Black Copper Marans! And either thus spring or later this year I will be ready to raise some chicks or pullets. Will you be trying to sell chicks or buckets for breeding from your Maran hens?
I'm down in Ky and pretty far from the 2-3 families in the states who own the registered French Standard recognized Marans, so It would be spectacular to be able to acquire a couple closer to me. I would be interested in one ra. Rooster/hen or one rooster and two hens.

:)

Oh, that was too cool! Spent yesterday afternoon up at Sunnyside Farms up in Brunswick. I had brand new boots with me, so Lloyd let me peek at some of his beautiful feathered beasties. Gorgeous! The pencilled rocks were spectacular, the orpingtons... all of 'em, Just lovely birds! Boy, I came home and looked at mine and was like "What a bunch of ragamuffins!" LOL! I love 'em, though :) But I'm definitely looking forward to getting more breeder birds-- just stunning!

Grinning Red Head, if it's helpful, they sell FBCM hatching eggs. I'll be getting some later this spring!

Not sure I did this correctly before.
Try to post from android- ha!

MightyMaran ,

I actually have BR, GLW, SLW, BAustrolorps, RIR, CW coming all in all!  I really thought about getting some EE the colorful eggs, so cute! Maybe next round!!

It's my understanding that BR & PR are the same chicken but with different feather colors. So same temperament, etc. Sounds like you have a beautiful assortment coming! I had wanted a mixed flock like that but had to settle on two breeds... Then the BRs didn't hatch well so Meyer offeredy choice of 5 or so breeds that they had. That's how I ended up with the eggers & BA. It all worked out... I'm happy with my girls but look forward to trying different breeds in the future too. :)
