OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

It's my understanding that BR & PR are the same chicken but with different feather colors. So same temperament, etc. Sounds like you have a beautiful assortment coming! I had wanted a mixed flock like that but had to settle on two breeds... Then the BRs didn't hatch well so Meyer offeredy choice of 5 or so breeds that they had. That's how I ended up with the eggers & BA. It all worked out... I'm happy with my girls but look forward to trying different breeds in the future too.

I'm crazy new to all the chicken stuff, I might have it wrong...when I say BR I'm going with Barred Rocks( black and white striped) , what is PR? Plymouth Rocks ? (those are all white right?) For some reason it never crossed my mind that they were the same, just different feathering! LOL! Here I am trying abbreviations and getting them all amuck! I am positive at some point we'll add easter eggers too! Those colorful eggs are too hard to resist!

PR usually stands for partridge rock, and yes, all the rocks are one breed -- plymouth rocks (just like wyandottes can be all different colors, or orpingtons, or marans). There are white plymouth rocks, barred plymouth rocks, partridge plymouth rocks, silver-pencilled rocks (WANT some of those!!!) -- also buff, blue, columbian and black :) They're wonderful egg-layers and calm, easy-to-care-for birds!

May I suggest the Cream Legbar, if you like pretty blue eggs?

They are also auto-sexing, which means you can tell male from female at hatching.

**wistful sigh** Still trying to make legbars happen! Seems to me, though, that I've got an order of eggs coming this spring from someone...

I called Tractor Supply and they use Mt. Healthy Hatchery. I called them and they are sending me a catalogue. Rather a chick magazine!! I talked to the lady and asked what she suggested. Told her I want to start off kinda small. I will drive there to get them, but pretty much think I am going to get two Rhode Island Reds, two Golden Comets, and two Buckeyes. I don't know what to do as far as a rooster. I eventually want to hatch eggs, but will have to do things one at a time.
Reese Poultry beat me to it. I had Golden comets from Mt. Healthy and had no problem, but that IS where the Salmonella outbreak was last summer. You might try Golden buffs from Meyer if you want to keep your dollars in Ohio or Eagle Nest http://eaglenestpoultry.com/chicks.htm in Oceola. I really like Eagle Nest because they're small, local, and the owners do a LOT for local 4-H kids. And if you want Buckeyes, I'd recommend an Ohio breeder. There are plenty to choose from, and I'd suggest checking the American Buckeye Club's Breeder's Directory at: http://www.americanbuckeyeclub.blogspot.com/p/breeders-directory.html
