Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

Quote: Four and a half weeks is pretty early for wattles. Little Mr. #8 is precocious! I suppose #3 and #5 could be tall-combed pullets. You'll know for sure very soon.

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

Quote: Oh goodness. Yes #8 is almost certainly a roo, with those pink wattles already showing. I'm pretty suspicious or 1, 3, 5 and 6 as well with those "Roman Nose" combs, already pinkening up. 2, 4 and 7 I think are definitely little ladies. You'll know for sure in a day or two! They are...

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

Quote: Congrats on all the ladies. From your pictures I would guess it was #1 and #6 as well. In my experience with BCMs the roos give themselves away by how tall the comb is up between the eyes from a very early age. Post pictures of yours, Oregonkat!

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

Yep - exactly! My closest neighbors are dairy cows. When they're in the nearest pasture they graze four feet away from my kitchen window. Who knew cow belches were so loud?

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

5 roos and 2 cockerels must put on quite the symphony! I personally love a little rooster symphony. Would prefer that any day to noisy humans. @chickiesmommy I bet you will be fine. We had neighbors with illegal roosters when our setting was urban, and the roosters were no problem at all...

Oh my goodness, what a flock! I'm afraid I might be heading that direction. Aiming to keep it under a dozen, but we'll see.

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

Hahaha! My guess is that you're in Sharks territory, based on being urban and 90 minutes from where I am. Used to live there - Berryessa neighborhood. I bet you'll be able to get away with a decent little flock, unless your neighbors are evil. We used to hear roosters all the time, and once...

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

BeepBeep looks like a BCM with a goofy cream legbar hairdo. I'll post a picture of my silly-looking nine-week-old cream legbar baby tomorrow. Her name is Marigold, and she looks like a Roadrunner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_roadrunner

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

BeepBeep! She is SO cute! One of my baby pullets is a cream legbar. So excited for her to start laying. My drive to obtain a fancy assorted egg basket is somewhat insane, by my own standards. I'm normally never so obsessive about things. The addiction is totally real. They call it chicken...

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

Louis is an American Bresse. When he reached maturity he started acting a little aggressive toward the hens and the babies, but Patrick is SO gentle toward everyone, and he has established himself as alpha and now Louis is following his lead. Patrick has never been the least bit aggressive...

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

Yep! Louie is totally Patrick's sidekick. Always backing him up while Patrick takes the lead. Patrick has more of a tenor crow with Louie hitting the low notes, so we have some nice duets. I hope they keep getting along. Patrick had feathery feet from day one. I guess some BCMs have a lot...

Black Copper Marans - Time progression of sexing - UPDATED with WEEKs #1-3 PICTURES

He's not as colorful as David, but I think all his neck and saddle feathers aren't in yet. He has adorable feathery feet, and the cutest melodic voice. He talks a lot even when he's not crowing, and he always lets the girls know when a cat or dog wanders too close by. He's still good buddies...

Oh look how handsome he is! So happy you still have him. My Patrick is an absolute sweetie-pie as well.

What do you think of this little four week old Barnevelder? I'm thinking cockerel, but would love a second opinion!

Black Copper Maran Pullet or Roo

My boys are about the size of my smallest hen now. Patrick doesn't get bullied anymore, but sweet Louis is shyer and they still go after him a little bit. Here they are today, at 10 weeks. Still very sweet and getting handsomer every day.

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Ok, I'm a little bummed about this one. I bought an auto-sexing cream legbar female chick, and now at just over three weeks old she seems to be developing little pink wattles! Could she possibly still be a pullet? Thank you very much in advance for any help you can give! Here are the...

Black Copper Maran Pullet or Roo

They are still totally adorable. Patrick is the alpha rooster, and Louis is always a step behind. Patrick in particular is crowing up a storm, which luckily is no problem around here. The grown-up hens still chase and peck at them a bit, but the boys are almost as big as the girls, so that's...

Oh, he is beautiful! Fingers crossed he'll be a quiet rooster.

Black Copper Maran Pullet or Roo

Interesting! The one to the left is Violet - she's a Barnevelder, and they are supposed to be notoriously late bloomers. She does have quite a schnozz though, and she's very feisty. The other brown one is Marigold - a cream legbar. I got her at a few days old from the same farm I got the...
