I just had a super-late hatch from a pair of broodies. The first chick hatched after 30 days under the hens and over the past week 4 more have hatched, including one this morning(overnight?). I shared the story here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/661113/unusual-broody-hatch.
It's been...
I have had three successful hatches under a broody in the past. I have never done anything special with the eggs, just collect a dozen, and pop them under the broody and wait. I wanted to share the story of my broody's latest hatch because I have never heard of chicken eggs taking over a month...
Oh goody! I had convinced myself that they were all roos so I'm thrilled there may be some girls in there. Yay!
I think my mind was playing tricks on me to justify my getting more chicks, (in case I had to re-home all these) lol.
Thank you so much!
I was guessing they were about 4 weeks old, but now I'm thinking that they might be younger than that.
I was hoping to have some girls in there because my youngest layers are almost two. I had two layers that my broody hatched last summer but some predator got them Sat. night. The door wasn't...
I am so sorry for your losses.
I have also cried over losing girls to predators, but as others have said, don't let it discourage you. Once you are ready, you can re-enforce the coop and start again. I always feel guilty when it happens, like I failed them, but then I remember what a good life...
^Thanks for your feedback. If the two are Black Stars, would that mean they are pullets because of their colouring? (Although one of them has feather-y legs ) I also thought Cochin for the white chick and EE's for a couple of them. I've never had an Australorp but they sound like nice birds...
Thank you. My son and I have fallen in love with them already! I'm afraid now that they might have been somebody's 'rooster cull' because of their little combs, (ignorance is bliss). We already have a rooster and one is enough for us. Oh well, we'll just enjoy them for now and if they turn out...
Hi! I couldn't pass up these 7 cuties at the market this morning, (ok, ok,...and a pair of silkies), and I have no idea what they are!
A, C, D - have feathered feet.

My hens are all grown so having chicks again is so exciting. I'm curious as to what they...
Two summers ago, I was successful in giving my bantam broody 5 three-day-old chicks. I just tucked them under her late at night and she was mothering them when I checked at first light. Six weeks later the chicks (Wellies and Marans)were just as big as she was but she still tucked 'em in at...
Sorry, I don't have an answer, only the same question. My broody is sitting on a dozen eggs in her nest box that is about 3 1/2 ft off the ground. I want to move her to the floor of the coop so that the baby chicks don't fall out when they hatch but I'm not sure if moving her will cause her to...
I just candled 3 of the 12 and they look okay!! I'll candle again in a few days to make sure they are developing but I feel much better now than I did before.
I love dogs as well and although I was very upset, I didn't blame them. They didn't know any better and they both dropped the hen they...
Thanks for your reply. I will candle them tonight to see what I can see. I've never hatched before but Ellen has been broody all spring and my son and I are very eggscited to hear the peep of baby chicks again. We don't have a rooster (yet, lol), but last year we gave her dummy eggs and swapped...
I am worried about a similar situation. On Tuesday I gave my broody some fertile eggs to hatch. When I got home from work today I found her outside her house with the door knocked shut, (so she couldn't get back in). She raced in immediately when I opened the door and covered them up but I slid...
I know this is kind of last minute, but I thought it might still help someone. You should definately come early and bring appropriate boxes/crates to transport your new additions!
SAUGEEN FUR & FEATHER SHOW
Sunday, April 26th - 7AM Noon
Held at Mount Forest Fairground
King Street
I remember watching Grease at the drive-in, as well as the Coal Miners Daughter.
But was I the only one who got stuffed with her siblings into the trunk of their fathers Thunderbird, covered in blankets and jugs of oil/washer fluid etc, and told to be very quiet so that we could sneak in...

I agree with sending a non-emotional/non-threatening letter, however I would state that if she refused to meet you half way then you would have no other recourse than to file a complaint.
I am wondering though, how long has this been going on? Are the roosters new, or did you recently...
