Dead Hen with Large Abdominal Tumor Like Cooked Meat

Thanks. Her name was Felicia. Named from Ice Cube’s movie Friday. She was very sweet. Well, in the end. She was actually a really bossy boss of the flock until she got sick. “Bye, Felicia!” I didn’t take pics because of the smell. I almost barfed and had to wrap it up quickly. I am much better...

Dead Hen with Large Abdominal Tumor Like Cooked Meat

Hello, I just wanted to post this because I am not finding anything about it here or anywhere online. I have a 3 yo Golden Comet hen who I noticed was waddling with a very heavy abdomen. Suspected egg bound, but gave calcium and epsom salt soaks but no improvement. Still eating and drinking...

    A FOOD/PELLET NIGHTMARE

Oh, of course, if I start fermenting, no metal! That might make me not want to. Hmmm . . .Thanks!

    A FOOD/PELLET NIGHTMARE

I would love to ferment the feed; thanks for the reminder! I happened to have old stainless steel no-tip dog food bowls that I had to use one day out of desperation. They are perfect! Chickens can’t tip them, either, and if you only fill them halfway, they can’t bill out any feed! I’ve been...

    Another Ventilation Question

Gramma Chick, I do worry that the pop door open down low may cause a draft in combination with the upper vents and window I open for ventilation. Does anyone think that would cause a draft on the roosts? Is anything low supposed to be open? I did think ventilation was okay on all sides above the...

    Another Ventilation Question

I appreciate knowing it is hard to avoid minor comb frostbite at extremely low temps. Thanks for the hydro- / hygro- correction. I think I will remove the foam in the window since one foot above the roosts is good. You’re right; they definitely hunker. That’s a good chunk of ventilation space to...

    Another Ventilation Question

Aart, that would be too easy, a simple humidity plus temp formula! I will try the hydrometer.

    Another Ventilation Question

Thank you, welshies. I would never try to win for the sake of winning. ;) I’m sure he and I both just want what’s easiest and best for the birds at this point! And it is minor, I think. Just tips or surface spots. The BR in the pic, if you can zoom in, is a good example of how they all look...

    Ventilation Advice for Winter

Thank you for your perspective, Welshies. And smseverson, I think opening all the top vents you can is the best bet. And if you see frost inside, that’s a good indicator of more ventilation being needed. I don’t have any glass in mine to check. Would frost form inside on the uninsulated wood...

    Another Ventilation Question

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read this. These are pictures of my coop. I live in Missouri in the US. Until recently, I thought I had enough ventilation in my coop. But, I have more birds now, and We have recently had our coldest temps in a while, down to -9 F overnight and down to 0...

    Ventilation Advice for Winter

I’m afraid I’m not sure exactly what to tell you, but I am so glad to see your post today! I was on the verge of writing my own because, as you say, even if you’ve read and thought a lot about it (as I suspect we both have), it can be confusing to apply the general guidelines to your specific...

    Two Broody Hens

I think you are right about that. These two giants are at the top of the pecking order here. I'm glad you pointed that out!

    Two Broody Hens

I let them mix at 1 week and had no trouble. Just make sure the can't drown in the water dish. :(

    Two Broody Hens

I think someone told me to look at the bottoms of their feet. Jersey giant feet bottoms are green. And they have dark brown, almost black eyes. Don't think australorps do.

    Two Broody Hens

Hello, I have two broody jersey giants that went broody together, sat together, hatched together, and are raising the chicks together. So cute! There was a barred rock who sat with them, but they ran her off and kept her away soon after the hatch. She's no longer broody texhnically (roosts at...

Hen ate medicated chick starter-how long do we wait to eat eggs?

I have hens, a rooster, and now baby chicks from our little flock. I have been separating mamas and babies for the first two weeks, but now I want them to mingle with the whole flock, so i was wondering about the feed. I am going with medicated chick started for all, and we will eat the eggs. :)...

What caused tem to be so afraid?

I have tested it! I've gone out four separate times in my carhartt jacket, twice on one day and on different days, and every time they scatter, trying to climb the wire fence and tearing toenails (sometimes) in the process. Seemed mean to keep checking. Didn't understand but accepted it, and...

What caused tem to be so afraid?

No, it is the carhartt!! My chickens run from me in my carhartt or my son in his!! Never known anyone but us and don't mind other coats, camo, bright blue, hoods, hats of any type of color or anything in my hands, but hate carhartt!!

Too cold to keep my rooster alone in coop?

Good to know! I figure they are kept separate pretty frequently. I stuck him in with the girls last night, and I'm glad I did, because it turns out their water warmer is not working, and i wouldn't have been out to check on them as early if I hadn't had to get him out. :) and his toe was fine.
