Thanks! Everyone has already been so helpful & friendly. It's a nice change of pace. I can't wait to get my little flock and show them off.

What is the difference between Lavender Orpington and Isabel Orpington?

Lavender orpingtons are on our chicken wish list once we get settled on our land. Have you had them before? I'd love to know how your thoughts on them. Thanks. Being new to chickens and with no practical experience yet, it seems like you could mate them from what I've read. Again, no practical...

Closing coop windows at night? Yea or nay? What says YOU?

I don't have any chickens yet as we are still in the planning stages. I love how you recycled the cabinet doors for your boxes and door.

    Arizona Chickens

Just looked them up. Their feathers are like little pieces of artwork. I saw that they average about 3 eggs a week. In your opinion is that accurate?

    Arizona Chickens

Wow! That is a lot of chicks. Hatcheries have minimum orders...good to know. It's nice to have a community like BYC. This is a terrific accidental find. I have learned so much in the last few days. It makes sense to source the more exotic of the breeds locally. I imagine nothing worse than...

Never thought about it when choosing, but you're right I do like something a little different. Keep away from wild birds...check! That must have been very sad. The Lavender Orpingtons & Faverolle are just so stinking cute! I'll definitely let you know. We'll be up in Williams, but I love the...

I'd hate to open a package with dead chicks. Probably traumatic for the kids too. 😢 We expect the kids to play a big part in the chickens and other chores. My honey is already devising ways for the kids to earn extra electricity for their devices. :lau I'm definitely going to looking into...

    Coop Suggestions???

The Ana White plan would definitely need adjustments, not perfect but a good jumping off point. I like the second one too but it's way to big for my needs. Good luck with your coop. Post some pics when it's finished, I'd love to see what you end up with.

    Coop Suggestions???

I'm a newbie and don't have chickens yet. Still a year or so out from moving to our land. We're planning on having 5 hens so I think we'll need at least a 4'x6' coop, plus we'll have a run. I've been doing some research and found this which is by far my favorite. I think it will need some small...

Are the older pullets the ones that are around 15-22 weeks old?

    Arizona Chickens

Honestly, I'm not sure. I'll need to find out. The only thing I've been able to confirm is that we can have up to 5 hens per lot. LOL, of course the baby roosters would be the cutest. Darn boys! Do you think it's better to start with unhatched eggs, baby chicks, or older?

Good to know. I'm pretty sure my daughter-in-law, granddaughter, youngest grandson & myself are going to get attached pretty quick.

    Lavender orpington

Lavender Orpingtons one one of the breeds we are considering. How do you like them? I've read that they have a calm temperament and would be good around kids. I have no experience with chickens so this will be a new adventure for us. Also, about a year or so out so I am in the research phase.

    Arizona Chickens

Hi! We'll be up in Williams, near Valle. Thank you for the information. The Lavender's aren't recognized by the APA, and are considered rare but have been growing more popular. We're not really interested in the roosters at this point unless we decide to breed, but who knows what the future...

    Arizona Chickens

Still in research mode, and probably wont be living on our Northern AZ land for another year or so & we'll only be able to have a maximum of 5 hens. We can't have chickens where we are at in Mesa, but that hasn't stopped me from researching good egg laying hens that are also family friendly. I'd...

Soon to be Homesteader - Chickens are in my future

I'm familiar with Brookfield Zoo. It is a great zoo, but I've always preferred Lincoln Park. Yes, it is still free. Lincoln Park has improved many areas and is still my favorite. I spent a lot of time there when I was a kid and with my son when he was younger. Plus is that you at least have a...

Soon to be Homesteader - Chickens are in my future

The homesteading thing just kind of developed when my other half inherited a very tiny amount of money. Enough for land and in our thoughts best use of money. It was never in either of our perceived futures before this. I'm actually an inner city kid so who knew. No water, sewer, electric...just...
