Arizona Chickens

Pretty often those of us who order chicks need to order a box of 20 or 25 from the hatchery. I did that, and some on here have some of my extra chicks. I got them through the first crucial week, and a fellow BYCer in Chino Valley has 9 of them. Knock on wood, I have never gotten a box of dead chicks, but sometimes 1 or 2 in a box are DOA. I think it helps to order the more popular breeds from the hatcheries, the rare breeds seem to be more delicate as chicks. The one I lost from Ideal this last month was a Welsumer, not as common a breed that lays very dark eggs.

Wow! That is a lot of chicks. Hatcheries have minimum orders...good to know. It's nice to have a community like BYC. This is a terrific accidental find. I have learned so much in the last few days.

It makes sense to source the more exotic of the breeds locally. I imagine nothing worse than being excited for arrival then being disappointed upon receipt.

Those Welsumer eggs are pretty.

The Double Laced Barnevelder's have pretty feathering, plus lay pretty colored brown egg's too.

I think my pet chicken might have as few as 3 for a minimum, it varies by zip code. Hoover's is 15 and if you wanted 10 (they'll ship 12) you could get Hoovers from tractor supply, but it'd be all 10/12 of the same bird. And be very flexible and open to surprise as to when the TSC mail order hoover's birds arrive! Hoover's direct is very reliable though.

Different hatcheries have different minimum order amounts. Hoover's is 10, I believe. I would most like to be able to go in on an order with other BYCers, that way there would be less risk of having too many chickens! HA! :gig

Just looked them up. Their feathers are like little pieces of artwork. I saw that they average about 3 eggs a week. In your opinion is that accurate?

The 2 Blue Double Laced Barnevelder's that I have were laying petty well (one egg every other day) until they decided to go broody together. Since I broke them of it, they haven't gone back to laying in this heat yet.
