Hi all, two of my hens have a bad habit of pecking my rooster Dennis' feet (he is kochin, they pick out his feathers as they grow)... I have tried gentian spray and peckoff with no result. I have also tried vaseline... the two culprits are actually his original ladies, rather than later...
Hi all, I gave away 3 brothers 12 month old kochin/orpington cross roosters to a lad with a largeish flock of mixed poultry (30 or so birds including a few ducks/turkeys). One of the roosters has adjusted pretty well, but the other two are super-scared of the hens (though they are much larger...
Hi all, your advice would be gratefully appreciated on the following: 2 sister hens, favourite of my rooster Dennis, usually big brassy girls with a good position in the flock, both have taken a very severe moult and I think one of them is being pecked even barer by a lady in the flock who tends...
Hello Wyorp Rock and others, sorry for the delay in responding to you about Dennis and his joint problem - and yes - you are right I only posted his feet! - silly me! Thank you for the helpful advice about vaseline and spur trimming. I also took Den back to the vet who thinks that it may...
Hello all, my wonderful rooster Dennis, aged 2.5 has joint trouble, possibly as a result of infection, or just arthritis...definitely not bumblefoot, definitely in the joint (right leg) and now inflamed leg as a result. Vet has given him painkiller course and I am giving him glucosamine. I...
Hi there chicknquailmaster, thank you for this advice, I will not put those broodys together then... at a later date I'll have to reintroduce them all to each other and to the flock...
Hi Ridgerunner, thank you very much for these advices. I would love to leave her in the pen with the others but unfortunately her chicks would also be at risk of kites grabbing them, this has happened to my neighbours' chicks in the past so I think I will have to do the move as described by...
Hi all, I have 2 broody hens - I've separated one from the flock already as the other hens were trying to get her off the nest etc, the other has stood her ground and is very comfy atmo in the pen with the others; but I will have to separate her off before the hatch I think as there's not enough...
Hi all, I have followed a few threads on this topic... my wonderful black orpington rooster has gone suddenly lame over 3 days mainly in the right leg; he spends more time sensibly sitting down on a roost to take the weight off. Seems otherwise OK, eating, drinking, managing to give the others...
Hi all,
I hope you're all doing alright this new year, despite covid and other pressures. Thank you for all the help you've given me, a novice, on this forum. It's been fantastic.
So, I have ended up in chicken lockdown here in the UK, with 4 roosters and 9 hens. The problem is that the...
No I don't lulu... the advices tend to come up on my phone as the algorithms know I like chickens. Let's hope not too long as my lot are not happy about it.
Hi both, super helpful comments and answers - Much appreciate the help, feeling so lucky that I happen to have a pile of wood chippings ready at hand just at the right moment... I'll try your tips including the haybale to play with, and see how we go on. It's sad to lock them up but your...
Hi Aart,
That's handy as we are just creating some wood chippings....
Do you then clean out the cage or just let it pile up?
They were sleeping in 2 coops but the coops won't really fit in the cage.
Overnight temps can dip below zero occasionally, for the most part just above.
Hello UK small flock owners, I have a flock of 13 and from Monday will be putting them in a cage (which we will roof) about 4 metres by 3 metres, a bit crowded unfortunately but the best we can do. It's on muddy ground, wondering if to put straw down weekly. Also wondering if they will need...
Hi there Wyorp Rock, thank you for this advice and sorry for delay in replying. Dennis has settled down now - I keep meaning to post a pic as he is a handsome bird.
