    First Egg Countdown

Mine started laying Sunday and so far I've gotten 14 eggs from my 11 BO's. I think only 4 have started laying because that's the most I've gotten in one day. So far my egg count per day is: 1, 2, 4, 1, 4, and I've gotten 2 so far today.

    Rain catchment/nipple waterer and feeder

Thanks! We've been using it for a few months now and have only had to manually fill the waterer a handful of times. I'm very pleased with how it turned out and how well it's working.

    Laying hens = aggressive rooster?

I have 12 20-week-old BO's...one rooster and the rest hens. I just started getting eggs yesterday. The rooster has been especially aggressive toward me for a few days now. Is it normal for a roo to be especially aggressive when his hens are laying, or is this just a coincidence and there's...

Chicken snake caught in the act!!!

I've killed a pair of chicken snakes in the past few days. The first one I had seen the day before, and I was going to let her live since she was on the other side of the property from where my coop is. The next day she showed herself much closer so she met the hoe. Yesterday I saw what was...

    First Egg Countdown

I just realized my Buff Orpingtons are 17 weeks old today. My plan for the day is finish the lid on the nesting boxes on the coop and get them open for business. My rooster has been crowing for a couple weeks now, and I saw him successfully (as in she let him) mating one of the hens day before...

    Shooting competitive/fun

I shoot practical pistol competitions...mostly IDPA (I'm a 3 division Master), but I also dabble in USPSA occasionally. It's a ton of fun, and most clubs tend to be extremely willing to help new folks get started. Here's my Youtube channel...I have several videos posted that should give you...

    Musicians?

I'm a middle school/high school band director...just finished my 11th year teaching. I started on trombone, but nowadays can play just about anything that you'd see in a high school band.

Run gate help requested please? Picture heavy!

Why not build a rectangular frame out of 1x3 or 4 and mount it directly to the fence on top of the gap? I bet it would last longer.

    Chickens are friends, not food...

Sorry for the title paraphrased from Finding Nemo. I introduced the cat (who was picked up as a stray several months ago and nursed back to health) to the chickens this afternoon. Previously he's been locked in the garage when we let them out of the coop to forage. He seemed disinterested...

Here's my coop. All that's left is finishing the lid on the nesting box. I've posted this video elsewhere, but it explains the rainwater harvesting nipple watering system and feeder I built:

Husky Tale With A Horrible Ending

I hate that this happened. You did the right thing. If your neighbors can't accept the fact that THEIR dog was on YOUR property killing YOUR livestock/pets and got shot because of it they need to grow up. Their kids' lives are ruined?!? It sucks that they had so little to live for. Don't...

    Nipple Waters

I can't answer your first question because it rarely gets below freezing long enough to make a difference here. On your second question, though, I used 4 inch sewer pipe (its thinner and easier to work with) to make my feeder and it works great.

    Rain catchment/nipple waterer and feeder

A friend gave me an idea today...use oyster shell in weed cloth as a filter, which will also remove acidity in the rain water, and give the girls a bit of calcium in their water. I'll be adding this whenever it stops raining long enough to get out there.

Thanks! Both ideas were stolen/modified from stuff I found here. This forum is a fantastic resource.
