Good point spangledcornish! However we cover everything that a judge could ask of a showman. Most may not do walking, or examination, but it still important to know how to do those things =)
I help with all animals!
Right now I only have an instructional video out for Poultry, but videos for Rabbit, Sheep, Swine, Goats and Cattle are in production right now!
I wish we could give these away for free but the cost to make them is pretty high. One thing I can give away for free is...
Hello everyone! My name is Ken and my passion is helping young people learn to show their animals in 4H and FFA. If you have any questions, post them here and I will answer them
If you have a tip to give on showing poultry feel free to share it here!
Myself and a few amazing showmen have put together a step by step video teaching both new showmen, and advanced showmen alike how to master showing your bird.
I wish we could give this away for free, but we spent a lot of money producing this. It is our goal to create even more videos, and...
Totally understanding that this is scary! Since the egg shell is made up of 95% calcium corbonate (same ingredient found in sea shells, coral, pearls...), it is imperative that a laying hens diet be supplemented with it. Glad to see you are already on the right track with feeding =)
Scratch...
Well, sometimes the body rejects certain organs. There are also cases where hen's undergo a "sex change" of a sort, where they either pass the ovary, or it goes into a state of regress. While they don't actually undergo a complete sex change, they will stop laying eggs and take on some of the...
Wow that is so wrong! It is supposed to be all anonymous. That is sad that you are not welcomed by your local 4-H and FFA!! Around here I would kick some butt if you were treated that way
Your hen seems to have a Calcium deficiency! My first question is what are you feeding? She should be getting a LAYER CRUMBLE or PELLET. This feed contains the required ingredients for egg production.
Second, give your hens a Calcium supplement! Either CRUSHED egg shells (ensure they are...
Well, the reason why 4-H and FFA usually do better is because of the leaders that teach the kids everything they need to know, and even help them find really good birds! In my experience a lot of 4-H and FFA leaders are also breeders, so the kids in their project already have a step up on the...
This looks like the reproductive tract from the Uterus to the infundibulum (see below). As you can see it does not look like its just the Ovary.
If you see any bleeding, take the bird to the vet! I hope all is well with your flock
Two things to try first! It sounds like this is a classic Calcium deficiency in the hen's diet. Make sure you are feeding her a layer crumble or pellet, as this contains the required nutrients to produce good eggs. Finally, offer her either CRUSHED egg shells (giving them un-crushed shells could...
Unfortunately, roosters can be very brutal. I would suggest separating them, especially if you aren't breeding your hens! Also, you should most certainly separate this hen from the rest for awhile as the others will only make this worse. I hope all goes well, good luck
Alright I emailed a few judges and breeders here in California to see if they know anyone in Washington. In the mean time, check out the American Poultry Asociation and American Bantam Association. Are you 4-H, FFA or independent?
I would have to say that if any of its ancestors are from a hatchery, you are not likely to compete with any purebred! Connect with a breeder, get a hen and a good rooster to start with. If you plan on showing steer clear of commercial birds!
It sounds like she is not getting enough Calcium to complete the egg shell! The easiest way to give her more calcium is to crush the eggshells from any eggs you use and feed them to your hens. The shells MUST be crushed, if the shells look too much like an egg, then your hens will start to eat...
