The weird egg thread has a lot of examples of a thing called "lash" -- which is the lining of the reproductive tract. If I understand correctly, some hens shed this from time to time when coming into lay or going out of law.

That was my first thought, too. An ovary, or more... But how can that bird still be alive? And why wasn't there a bunch of blood?

Well, sometimes the body rejects certain organs. There are also cases where hen's undergo a "sex change" of a sort, where they either pass the ovary, or it goes into a state of regress. While they don't actually undergo a complete sex change, they will stop laying eggs and take on some of the physical characteristics of a rooster. Crazy stuff!

It doesn't look like a lash egg, those look different. It looks like something in the reproductive tract. If it is, your hen will likely never lay again.
