Does a hen have to be bred before each egg for egg to be fertile?

Thanks very much to both of you. I've long sought an answer to that question!

Does a hen have to be bred before each egg for egg to be fertile?

This seems like a simple question but I've had a very hard time getting it answered. I understand that a hen will lay an egg about every day- with or without a rooster having bred her. That isn't my question. What I would like to know is whether a hen has to be bred after every single egg (ie...

    Chickens are eating Styrofoam!!! HELP!!!

I had a bunch of styrofoam tobacco plant trays in the back of my property that I rarely go to. My chickens are free range and apparently discovered the styrofoam some time ago. It is absolutely unbelievable how much they have been eating, and now that I've known about it I've paid attention...

Sitting on eggs but still laying more!

Mine did finally quit laying and has been sitting 24/7 ever since. So give her time and she should shut the egg making machine off! haha

Sitting on eggs but still laying more!

Thank you for that. But I let them get up to 16 eggs and she couldn't even cover them (she is small for a jersey). Anything more than 12 she can't cover, that is why I'm a little worried about this. WHen she lays a new one then either it or one of her original ones ends up uncovered on edge...

Sitting on eggs but still laying more!

She is my only free hen right now, so its her for sure. As I said in my post, I have marked her first 12 eggs so when i remove the new ones I know the same 12 have been there the whole time and will hatch together. But still....its crazy to have to keep doing this everyday. ha. Thanks for the...

Sitting on eggs but still laying more!

Great question, but yes, in this case I am sure. I only have 1 other hen right now and she just hatched babies and I locked them in the coop for a few days until the chicks are stronger. So yes, it has to be her eggs.

Sitting on eggs but still laying more!

Hi Folks. I've had a few chickens for a few years but still consider myself very much a beginner. Therefore, if what I am posting about is a very common problem with a simple solution/cure/prevention, then forgive my ignorance. My chickens are free range. Anyway, I have a Jersey Giant Hen...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

Once again, I am very appreciative for the people who have responded on this thread, and especially for your honesty. I was under the impression that most good chicken owners just give some type of coccidiosis prevention medication as a responsible safeguard against the parasite....much like I...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

PRELIMINARY RESULTS ARE IN! I could not be more impressed with our state lab. THey received the bird at 9 am today and called me at 11 am with a preliminary assessment based only on the physical dissection and exam- ie no microscopic slides or lab tests are done yet. The very kind, helpful...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

Thanks all. The last chicken that died is now in route via fed ex to the necropsy lab. I'll let you know how it turns out. I've been doing my own research, which is course is very elementary, but I must say I have to wonder if it isn't Coccidia. For one thing, I read Opposums to do get it...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

BobdBirddog, that was an incredibly helpful post filled with lots of extremely good information and ideas, so thank-you so very much. I also thought it was especially thoughtful that you mentioned for me to be careful and not mix ammonia and bleach- because while I happened to know that, an...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

Thanks so much for your concern. The fruit tree spray is just the spectricide once and done that you buy at lowe's and I mix it according to manufacturers suggestion. I have used it before but must admit to having used it a little more this year due to increase in Japanese beetle pressure on...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

SCARY UPDATE: A few minutes ago I walked outside and found an almost dead opossum laying in my front yard, about 100 yards from my chicken house. It could barely move and had no signs of trauma (as did none of my dead birds, so I'm not suggesting he is what killed them). I've never seen a...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

Wow...how incredibly helpful, Kathy! THank-you so much for that information and related instructions. I was somewhat disregarding the necropsy suggestions because I figured it was expensive, but thanks to you it looks like it may cost little more than the shipping! If (when) I loose another...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

Thank you all very much for taking time to try and help. I live just north of Nashville, TN. I'm in a rural area and the only nearby vet admits to knowing almost nothing about chickens. I think you folks have given me 2 good theories to explore: First, the water. I get their water out of a...

    chickens dying daily! HELP!!!!

I desperately need some help! I doubt you'll be able to tell me whats going on with the limited info I am going to provide, but maybe you can at least give a few possibilities? I've had chickens the last 4 years and never had anything like this. Basically, every day I am having 1-2 of my...

    Please help: geese killed daily!

WOW! THe more I hear and read, especially from cgmccary (who seems very knowledgeable on GHO's!) the more convinced I am that you all have absolutely solved my mystery. I, too, VERY often hear owls hooting at dusk and early night, but for some reason I just never really thought about them as...
