    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

From one of my BRs. They are both laying. My Cochins are not far behind as their waddles and combs are getting really red and larger.

Patiently waiting for our 22 1/2 week old Barred Rocks to start laying!

My BRs just started laying last week and they were 23 weeks old. They lay one a day, though, but small eggs still. They still tasted great, though.

    Need help with chicjen fencing

I think the easiest thing to do would be electric poultry netting. It's not the cheapest, but it works. I use the Premier1 PoultryNET Plus with a solar powered energizer. I only have 100' and I use it to create temporary "free range" spaces for my 5 bird flock. We have a high predator load...

    Run Versus Electric Poultry Fence

I am doing both. The girls will be in their covered run when I'm not there. When I'm there, they will be out in their 48" poultry net (from Premier1). All of this is inside our fenced in yard (3 rail wood fence with galvanized wire backing) We have a high predator load (fox, bobcat, bears...

I like it a lot! I am looking forward to decorating my coop now that it's in place.

My chickens should be in their new home by the end of the weekend. Pad construction is finished. Now we are just moving 6 tons of road base into the pad and compacting it. I will get pictures when it's finished.

I plan on giving them a dust bath box, for sure. They are currently creating a crater in their temporary run. Sunbathing and dust bathing.

Road base is essentially crushed rock/sand with some larger gravel mixed in. It compacts well. It is what most people would use for a pad as its a lot more stable than if filled with sand or dirt. For their run, I will probably add sand on top of the base. Here is what it looks like:

    Do we have a Roo?

You've got pullets. Pullets will get a little pink in the comb and waddles around this age.

Not yet. My husband has decided we need an overengineered pad for it and the run. He'll be done with that today and we will fill it with road base on Tuesday. I've been getting them out every day, though.

Great I'm thinking we may have to involve a winch. I am an engineer. I can figure this out. . .hopefully.

It looks great! I got mine on Friday. It's heavy!! We are now trying to figure out how to get it off our trailer and positioned properly without killing ourselves. I think it weighs 1500lbs.

I got their Cape Style 4x6. It's more garden shed like. Supposed to be done this weekend.

Is that from Rocky Mountain Storage sheds? I am going to pick up my coop from them this week, which is good considering I have almost 10 week old pullets living in a dog kennel right now.

I texted my husband this morning (he's on a business trip) "what's that big ball of fire in the sky?" So nice to have a warmer, sunny spring day.

Newbie here with 5 new chicks and a new coop in Northern MN / Question about chicks

I am also new to chickens. I was thinking about getting the Rjode Island Reds, but I heard they can be a pain in the butt and mean. It sounds like you may just have a typical RIR. How old are the chicks? Could be that your smaller Americana (most likely an Easter egger) is a slow developer...

Store bought coop and having issues with hens!

I bought a coop from mypetchicken, built it and hated it. I don't have the time to build my own, so I bought one from a local shed company. It's much more sturdy than that flimsy thing I bought. It felt like it was made of balsa wood. That is not going to stand up to our predators and weather...

What treat did your chickies get today?

Mine got kale, which is one of their faves. Yesterday they got some bell pepper, which they seemed to like.

BIG RAT!! Treadle Feeder from Northern Hydraulics and other questions.

I just ordered the Grandpa's Treadle Feeder from Amazon for $124 shipped. For some reason, it looks like they're on special right now. I like the Grandpa's because they're metal.

10 week barred rock - am I going to crow or lay an egg?

Pullet. Looks a lot like my 9-week old girls. A roo would have a bigger, redder comb and waddles. My friend has a BR roo about this age and his comb and waddles are at least 2x the size of mine and they are pretty bright red.
