We're doing great. Leveled off at 20 hens, that seems to be just the right number for me. Added the last four on 10/13/23, which happened to be a Friday, so I named them Jason, Michael, Freddy, and Chucky (yes, they're hens). 🤣
I just killed two cockerels this morning for the same reason. They were both being semi aggressive with my younger hens (I have a mixed age flock of 25...well, 23 now) and I actually had to hit one yesterday to get him to let go of a pullet. It was my first time culling a bird I had raised. I...
I freeze blocks of ice in round plastic food storage containers and then float the blocks of ice in my hens' water dishes. I also freeze grapes as a treat on hot days.
1. How old are the members of your flock(s) & what does it (do they) consist of? I have ten hens: Two Barred Rocks (1 year olds), two Black Copper Marans, (1 year olds), one Rhode Island Red (1 year old), three Easter Eggers (five months old), one Welsummer (recently adopted 3 year old), and a...
I bought a prefab coop like this second-hand from my neighbor for $50. I use it when I add chicks to my small flock until they are large enough to integrate. Other than that, pretty useless. It doesn't even have any perches (which I added).
I have Barred Rocks, Copper Marans, Easter Eggers, and one Rhode Island Red. The funny thing to me is that one of my Marans lays eggs almost identical to the RIR.
Thank you! I remember thinking my RIR was seriously ugly at this stage, but these chicks continue to be adorable. (BTW, my RIR is one of my favorite hens, and my best layer, ugly duckling status notwithstanding.)
I had a lone hen once who was desperately lonely. I put a stuffed octopus in the coop with her and she snuggled right up to it. It was about the same size and color as she was.
I am sorry for your loss.
