Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

We're doing great. Leveled off at 20 hens, that seems to be just the right number for me. Added the last four on 10/13/23, which happened to be a Friday, so I named them Jason, Michael, Freddy, and Chucky (yes, they're hens). 🤣

My teenaged Marans are starting to lay. The others are from a RIR, an Easter Egger and a Barred Rock.

I did it... I butchered a problem causing Rooster

I just killed two cockerels this morning for the same reason. They were both being semi aggressive with my younger hens (I have a mixed age flock of 25...well, 23 now) and I actually had to hit one yesterday to get him to let go of a pullet. It was my first time culling a bird I had raised. I...

Hoop Coop in TX, I think it might have been a bad idea

I freeze blocks of ice in round plastic food storage containers and then float the blocks of ice in my hens' water dishes. I also freeze grapes as a treat on hot days.

Common knowledge that an inexperienced person should know?

I had a bit of trouble with hawks and I bought an owl decoy. Haven't lost a hen since (it's been almost a year now).

Molting rarely begins in January. Your birds will probably molt the following August/September.

How do you feed your flock?

    1. How old are the members of your flock(s) & what does it (do they) consist of? I have ten hens: Two Barred Rocks (1 year olds), two Black Copper Marans, (1 year olds), one Rhode Island Red (1 year old), three Easter Eggers (five months old), one Welsummer (recently adopted 3 year old), and a...

    Prefab Chicken Coop Rip-Off?

I bought a prefab coop like this second-hand from my neighbor for $50. I use it when I add chicks to my small flock until they are large enough to integrate. Other than that, pretty useless. It doesn't even have any perches (which I added).

Official BYC Poll: How Many Different Egg Colors Are You Getting (or plan to be getting) From Your Flock This Year?

I have Barred Rocks, Copper Marans, Easter Eggers, and one Rhode Island Red. The funny thing to me is that one of my Marans lays eggs almost identical to the RIR.

    Our new Easter Eggers

Thank you! I remember thinking my RIR was seriously ugly at this stage, but these chicks continue to be adorable. (BTW, my RIR is one of my favorite hens, and my best layer, ugly duckling status notwithstanding.)

    Our new Easter Eggers

*I* thought so. I am getting tired of explaining the joke to my non-chicken friends.

Lost 4 chickens today. In shock.

I had a lone hen once who was desperately lonely. I put a stuffed octopus in the coop with her and she snuggled right up to it. It was about the same size and color as she was. I am sorry for your loss.
