    I miss my roo

I am so sorry! I know how you feel! I just had to re-home my third "hen" that turned out to be a rooster. He was a stunning uniquely marked Showgirl. I absolutely loved each one of them and it gets more difficult each time. My hens did the same thing as yours. They seem to go through a rough...

Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

Is there any way to keep my rooster from crowing? He does not crow every morning, and I have never heard him crow during the day. If he is "less dominant" (not that he is mean in any way!!!) will he be happy with his hens and not sing in the morning?

    Urban crowing

Is there anything that would work to make him not crow (I am not asking about surgical procedures - those are dangerous and many inhumane)? If he doesn't crow I can keep him... if he crows, then he needs to be re-homed.

Do you have any pictures? I am not familiar with those colors.

What breed and gender are these two?

Thanks! I like them and relieved to hear that you all think they are pullets. The black and white one went through a tragically "ugly phase" and lost most of her feathers. The baby fluff would fall out and leave giant bald spots until the new very fine feathering came in. Her feathers are...

Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

around here is Florida - Tampa Bay area and unfortunately I have to re-home him due to ordinances. Thankfully no one has complained while I search for a good home for him! I really don't want to give him up though.

    Cochin Thread!!!

Thank you! I am hoping the one on the left keeps the white feathering on her head. It has been getting darker as she ages.

What breed and gender are these two?

Glad to hear that you think they are pullets! That is a relief. I was told the first may be a brahma mix when I got her - but she has odd feathers that stick out from either side of her beak. The black and white one I think is a cochin mix too. Her feathers are really fine though.

    Cochin Thread!!!

Here are my two bantam cochin ladies. They tend to stick together and are two of the sweetest (and silkiest) birds I own!

What breed and gender are these two?

I have raised these two since they were only about a week old. Does anyone have an idea on what they might be and if they are cockerels or pullets? The gray one is about 3 months old, the black and white one is about 4.5 months. Thanks!

Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

Thanks! He was supposed to be a hen. I will have to do more research on where to get eggs or chicks since they are not common around here.

Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

I am new to this and am having trouble with uploading images, so I hope this worked. He's my imperfect but wonderfully awesome showgirl. Definitely the most unique bird in my flock and reminds me of a small dinosaur running around my yard. I would love another but they are hard to find in my area!

FLORIDA - Please list your City here That Allows Chickens!

I don't know what the ordinance is for all of Pinellas, but with in the city of St. Pete you are allowed to have hens. I do not believe there is currently a limit. However, the law states that you have to get the approval from every house within 100 feet of your property line. Sort of a stupid...

    need a modified coop design

Shingles! I would not have thought of that. Habitat here I come! I live in FL so the rain and humidity would destroy sandpaper quickly. The rain/flooding is also why I need to have an elevated coop. Has anyone successfully planted in their run area? If so, what type of plants?

    need a modified coop design

Thanks! I am very excited to know she should be able to get up and down the ramp (without tumbling!). The sandpaper is a great idea, but how long does it last outside if it is getting wet?

    need a modified coop design

The one with the injured leg, I believe it is a birth defect, can't really walk and basically hops. I am concerned that she does not have the balance or stamina to walk up a ramp. I am glad to know that the other one should not have a problem!

    Urban crowing

I know, but apparently I don't like to do things the easy way! I live within city limits and need quiet, non-flighty or flying birds. I am partial to the silkies (and their relatives), cochins, brahmas, etc.

    need a modified coop design

I am in the process of building a new coop/run for my chickens. My current one only has only a small step in and out. I have bantams - two of which are silkies. I would like the coop off the ground but am not sure of their ability to walk up a ramp. One of the silkies has a bad leg and has...

    Urban crowing

I have done a lot of research but there does not seem to be any guaranteed way to tell if your chick is male or female. In order to save myself from the heartbreak of having to re-home my beloved pets, how can I be sure that I get pullets (other than buying already laying hens)? My flock is a...

    Urban crowing

Thank you. I will look at the forums/subforums you suggested. I live in Florida, and unfortunately there's an abundance of roosters needing re-homing due to ordinances. Personally, I think my neighbor's dog who barks at all hours is more of a noise issue than a rooster that will crow...
