    Sorry for your loss. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with a similar hen of mine. First time I've seen this type of thing before. Felt around her abdomen and it feels like fluid. Not sure what egg bound would feel like. I'll give her a warm soak in a dish pan and check her vent as you did.

    Half inch cloth is better but if you want to save the $$ some people use welded wire covered by a layer of regular chicken wire. Chicken wire rusts out quick and I don't feel like doing it over so I went a good guage cloth.

    That's why I'm switching. Space is an issue but also more maintenance than I'd like with 24 birds. Ideal for 12 or less though. Hammock sounds like a good idea. What material did you end up using?

    Walmart has usa made galvanized drip pans for 11 but I think they are less than an inch deep. I'm trying to figure out a different setup to change from pdz litter.

    I like pine shavings but the chickens keep kicking it to the walls leaving the middle bare. Maybe I'm not spreading it thick enough. Straw always seemed to work well.

    It felt overkill to me too on my 8×12 but now I'm enjoying the head room. I ended up making a shelf around six foot for the bales of shavings.

    I'd make a good sized permanent coop with a couple different popdoors and just rotate the electric fencing. The tractor setup sounds like a lot of work with that many chickens. Just make sure they are layers and not retirement hens :)

    I would leave the bottom and just lay a strip of hardware cloth around the outside of the run. Cover it with dirt or rock.

    The majority of people here recommend the wide side of a 2×4. If you want to go round I'd use a good size somewhat straight limb about three to four inch across.

    As long as you have comfortable roost space I'd go as big as you can with the run and at least partially covered. The run should be close to 12×16 for 20 birds if possible.

    A 10×10 is more than enough for 17 chicks. If possible id go bigger on the run though if they are not allowed to free range.

    I believe it is. I will probably use 2×4 for the top and 2×6 for the bottom to keep the run material in better.

    The roost is usually around 48in but they will go higher given the chance. I had to block off my shelf and 8ft ceiling rafters. Just make sure the floor is padded well with bedding so they don't hurt their feet coming down. A general size for nest boxes is 12 inch square for standard breed...

    Chickens like to scratch and lining the bottom could damage their feet. Some cover the cloth with a few inches of dirt but since you plan on moving it around the yard that wouldn't make much sense. Will you be leaving the chicken door open at all times or let them in & out?

    Never have used one myself but maybe a solar powered shed light. Here's a cheap one from walmart. http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/37568187 Being wireless I'm not sure if it would work properly with the light on the inside though.

    I like it. Might make one similar to it for a brooder or timeout coop. Miss having ducks but not the mess. Funny watching them go nuts after filling up their pool with fresh water.

    Thanks for posting! Kinda awkward to scoop at least for me so I toss the droppings on the mesh with the plastic scoop.
