My two get super scared when my hand is in the brooder, or try to peck at it, which is not behavior I want to encourage. It's hard to hold them because they peck and move so quickly that I can't even pick them up in the first place. Is this normal for baby chicks, or are mine extra skittish?
So, I have 2 baby chicks, a little over a week old I believe. One is a buff orpington, one is a slw, both females. I want to socialize them better, because right now, they're a bit unfriendly. They get very scared when I go to put my hand in their bin, and they are very flighty. Both birds have...
Today the other two chicks seem especially flighty and nervous, even pecking at me when I go to pick them up. Are most baby chicks like this, and it just takes time for them to become calmer? It seems a little unusual how scared and flighty they are.
Quick update: Penny and Buffy have become very bonded, which makes me feel bad for Ronnie, but she seems pretty happy, and she's also the easiest to pick up and hold. Today she was sleeping a lot, even when I was holding her, she fell asleep right in my hands.
What do you guys do to get your...
I had to separate them because it was clear that Ronnie wouldn't stop pecking at Penny, and she was even starting to drag her. She's very warm though, and it helps that she's the biggest of the chicks.
So, my baby chicks arrived a day early, which was nice. I would've made this post sooner, but we were having trouble with the chicks, so I had started another thread about that. Anyway, we have one silver laced wyandotte named Penny, one light brahma named Ronnie, and one buff orpington who...
I'm wondering if it has something to do with the darker color of the slw. They still aren't getting along, although the buff orpington is doing fine with the slw.
We turned off the heat lamp since it's been hot today, because the chicks got more stressed, so we turned it back on and they were okay. We tried to reintroduce the brahma and slw, but as soon as I set her down, she went after the slw. The buff orpington actually jumped in front and gave the...
Hi everyone, I posted my own thread about this problem but I figured i'd post here too. I just got 3 baby chicks today, one buff orpington, one light brahma, and one slw. The light brahma is the largest, and the slw is the smallest. When I put them all in their large plastic bin, the light...
I'm not sure if this theory would even be realistic, but could the brahma be pecking the slw because both the brahma and buff orpington are yellow, and the slw is darker and looks so different? We still have the brahma separated and haven't tried putting her back with the others yet.
The heat lamp is only on one side, and that side is about 90 degrees. Then there's a cooler side with the food and water, and it seems like they're okay with the temperature because they were starting to fall asleep.
Thank you, I looked up the disease but no results came up, so I was very worried. Their habitat is a plastic bin, it's quite large so I don't think its an issue with space. The light brahma is now in a separate cardboard box inside the bin, with food and water. Other info: The slw chirps very...
