Feather eating hen - keep (separated), cure, cull?

Hi everyone, just letting you know that dispite separating her again and offering the whole flock some chick starter feed (they all love it😂) our hen still kept pulling feathers. We have now rehomed her into a flock with a rooster whose owner is quite sure can handle her… So far she is behaving...

😳Ok, I know chickens will eat small animals (mine catch the occasional frog) but I cannot see myself feeding them mice…

Feather eating hen - keep (separated), cure, cull?

I thought about protein, too, but din‘t mealworms provide it, too? Will look into fish as an option, thank you.

Feather eating hen - keep (separated), cure, cull?

Thank you for your advice👍 Unfortunately, I cannot have a rooster (we promised the neighbours). The other idea sounds interesting but I‘m afraid my separated area is a bit small.

Feather eating hen - keep (separated), cure, cull?

Hello everyone, I have a problem with a feather eater and would love to hear your advice. My setup: seven hens in a 700 square feet run with bushes, perches, ladders ect. I have five feeders with layer feed and a bowl with oyster shells that are always filled. In addition, the girls get fruits...

Run updates - enrichment, new roof and my “chicken TV seat“ (yes, that‘s a thing)

Oh, and because this area tends to get muddy in rainy weather I added a little path. Let‘s see how long the girls keep the woodchips in there😂

Run updates - enrichment, new roof and my “chicken TV seat“ (yes, that‘s a thing)

Here is the After😊The girls seem to enjoy the perches and different kinds of ladders. The little „snack boxes“ add to the attraction. I still have to add a few details but overall I‘m quite happy with it😊

Run updates - enrichment, new roof and my “chicken TV seat“ (yes, that‘s a thing)

Hello everyone, here is another update. This time I tackled my daughter‘s old swingset. Three years ago when I built the run I turned it into a little shelter. The girls love it but I had a few issues with it. Because of the low ceiling I could not get down there very well and I kept worrying...

Thanks, I‘ll add the location 👍 The shutter does close, the hinges are at the bottom so the shutter also serves as a table. I still have to add the shutter on the other side though😊

Run updates - enrichment, new roof and my “chicken TV seat“ (yes, that‘s a thing)

Here some current pictures of my TV seat and a little chicken toy I dubbed the bell board. Some chickens ignore it but others enjoy pecking the bells. I am currently working at another little project in the run and will post pictures when it is done. I hope I could give you a few useful ideas 😊

Run updates - enrichment, new roof and my “chicken TV seat“ (yes, that‘s a thing)

As for enrichment, I added two platforms, a dust bath in one half of an old wine barrel and, my favourite, an old hand wagon. The ladies love it 😍

Run updates - enrichment, new roof and my “chicken TV seat“ (yes, that‘s a thing)

Another update that wanted for myself was a seat with a roof to watch chicken TV😂 We get a lot of rainy or windy weather here and the simple garden chair just wasn‘t enough any more… I also used the chance to rip out the grass and plant a meadow of bee friendly flowers. My husband and daughter...

Run updates - enrichment, new roof and my “chicken TV seat“ (yes, that‘s a thing)

Hallo everyone, I would like to use this thread to post some updates to our run. Word of warning: except for the coop which was built by a carpenter, everything was built by me and I‘m an enthusiastic amateur. Everything is very sturdy but I cannot do right angles 🫣 The chickens don‘t seem to...
