Gross black scabby spot ~ What is it and how to treat it.

Hi All! TIA for your help. I noticed one of my hens had an odd spot about 2-3” below her vent. Upon further inspection I found a rather large nasty spot of what looks like scabby skin. I didn’t notice any smell and it didn’t seem wet. (It’s wet in the picture because I’d just finished washing...

Hen pecks another hen WHILE Rooster is mating?!

He just did his thing and didn’t seem phased at all. Hopefully it will pass. Betty is last in the pecking order as is. Sure would hate to see them become more violent towards her.

Hen pecks another hen WHILE Rooster is mating?!

I had Jack and Sally first. They arrived last May. Betty and Lucy (who doesn’t seem to be an issue) I got a few months later. They have all been together since last Sept or Oct.

Hen pecks another hen WHILE Rooster is mating?!

Good question. I’m guessing Jack and Sally are around 15 months? Betty I have no idea.

Hen pecks another hen WHILE Rooster is mating?!

I guess. Jack’s a pretty happy guy with 3 hens. Not sure why Sally’s gotta be mean. Chickens can be weird!

Hen pecks another hen WHILE Rooster is mating?!

I saw a disturbing act today. My Serama rooster Jack was in the act of mating with Serama Betty when Serama Sally started pecking Betty. Sally attacked Betty twice while Rooster Jack was mating with Betty. Why in the world would Sally attack Betty?

    Serama housing Question

Silly question but for those of you with seramas how big did you make the door opening? We are building a coop and currently are thinking of making the door 8x6. Is that big enough? Thanks!!!

    Feathers are just awful

Her and her friend are the additional hes for the roo. I made the mistake of getting just one hen initially for him but she’s been broody since they moved outside so poor Jack has been all by himself. So I got him 2 new girlfriends. Hopefully he’ll place nice.

    Feathers are just awful

Ha! I got her specifically because my little roo needs a girlfriend. May have to rethink that Thank you again for your response! You’ve renewed my hope for poor “Ugly Betty”. Maybe one day soon she’ll be Bombshell Betty.

    Feathers are just awful

No worries! Thank you so much for responding. Did you keep her segregated from the others while she grew new feathers? Currently her and her friend are quarantined since I just got them from a breeder but would like to move them to their new home in a few weeks. I just don’t want the others...

    Feathers are just awful

Seaecho what was the outcome of your frizzle. Did she ever get her feathers back? I’ve got one in the same shape and am looking for solutions. Thanks!

Add Serama pair to Mixed Flock

That’s very helpful! I tried to do an introduction while everyone was out free ranging and all the big girls immediately tried to attack the Serama roo. When you intro them at night do you just sneak them in the roost bar and hope for the best or are you there super early in the morning to see...

Add Serama pair to Mixed Flock

I have a m/f pair of 5 month old seramas that have been quarantined and are ready to be introduced to their flockmates (2 large fowl hens, 2 bantams and 2 2mo old pullets). All this week I’ve had the seramas in a wire dog kennel in the same run as the rest of the crew. This evening while the...

Mama Hen not the best... 2 issues

Mabel is my (almost) one-year-old bantam easter egger who went broody mid April/first part of May. I had an order of day-old chicks scheduled to arrive mid-May so we made sure she was truly broody, let her sit on fake eggs and then slipped the chicks under her the evening of their arrival. All...

Mama w/ Chicks in high temps

Thank you! That’s the reassurance I needed! I grabbed the patio umbrella and hauled it down to the coop to cover the nest box. Hopefully that will help. I just don’t want to lose my hen to heat stroke.

Mama w/ Chicks in high temps

I just got 2 chicks yesterday and snuck them under my broody hen last night. Everything seems to be going well except in north Texas our temps are in the mid to high 90s. Mama has refused to leave her nesting box for several days and now with the babies in there I have a security pen around all...

Weird poop - not sure what to do

Ironically it’s cooler (in the 30s) and wet right now. Has been for going on 4 days. The girls are outside in a non-heated coop so I don’t think it’s heat related.

Weird poop - not sure what to do

Thank you all for your feedback. She laid an egg today and again acted totally normal. I’ll keep watching her and see if the poo firms up.

Weird poop - not sure what to do

Addiitonal Info: 1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) - Polish Bantam, 9 months old, don't know the weight but it seems normal. 2) What is the behavior, exactly. - that's the confusing part. She seemed off yesterday but is...

Weird poop - not sure what to do

Hi All! Hoping for some advice. Yesterday morning when I went to do chores I found my polish bantam standing by herself in the run away from the others kind of puffed up. It’s been cold and wet (seriously I’m thinking of building an ark) the last few days and we discovered the coop has a leak...
