    Dying chicken.

While watering her the diagnosis became clear: Sour crop. I massaged her upside down yesterday. A little did seem to happen, but she swallowed whatever came up. I gave her water (with apple vinegar) and dilute yogurt. During the heat she was laying under a sprinkler where a bit of water would...

    Dying chicken.

Thank you, I will try that. I think with the heat today I will also see if I can set up a misting system for them, 107 for a sick chicken is a bit brutal. Any other advice, ideas what it could be?

    Dying chicken.

I have a 3 year old buff orphington who is on her last leg. Her eyes and comb are dull looking and she walks with difficulty. I see no other clear signs of disease, I think her symptoms are mainly of dehydration. It is HOT here at the moment, she wont last long without drinking. I realize that...

How to feed chicks in a mixed "flock"

I found this on Purina's website: http://poultry.purinamills.com/ASKTHEEXPERTS/FAQs/ECMD007942.aspx This makes me feel a lot better. I do not want to contribute to the build up of antibiotics resistant bacteria, but this food does not appear to contribute to that problem at all. Phew! I guess...

    Crowing hen

I have a Black Australorp that crows, and she is still laying. She lays maybe 5-6 eggs a week. I only have two hens, and the crowing started when the other hen went broody. She crows in the morning after I let her out, especially if there is something wrong (missing drinking water outside...

How to feed chicks in a mixed "flock"

Thank you for your reply. I did not know that you can buy a "multi purpose" feed. I am not so concerned about the Mama, I don't eat her eggs. It it is the other chicken that still lays eggs that I am a bit worried about.

How to feed chicks in a mixed "flock"

First let me apologize: I am pretty sure the answer to this question is to be found in existing threads, but I have not been able to find it within the limited time I have available to sneak in chicken research at work... I have two hens that are 3 years old, one black Australorp and one Buff...

    Found 21 eggs today!!!

I got 3 today. Not many, but since I only have three hens I can hardly ask them for more . Real proud of my girls, they seem to be producing each about 6 eggs a week, and I do not use artificial light at all. The days are about 10 hours long here, and that seems to be enough for them. They are...

    Two eggs!!

They are really pretty. I have one girl giving me eggs just like that right now. Cute little "beginner eggs". Every time I pick one from the nest I am amazed how perfect it is. It feels more solid than a store bought egg (hard to explain) and I love when I catch it still warm. Mmmm fresh!

What to do with all my eggs??

Just curious, why did you decide to get chickens in the first place? Everybody I know initially get them because they like the idea of fresh pasture eggs. I completely understand why you'd want to keep the girls, but why did you get the first chicks?

26 weeks and still no egg

I have 3 chickens from this spring, one is laying (started about a week ago, gives an egg almost every day), I am still waiting for the other two. I have been told that it is very common for (later) spring chickens not to start laying until next spring. They go into a molt in fall instead. I did...

NOW I know what was going in in her little brain

She laid a second egg today, and this time in the nesting box away from predators like 3 year old girls It is the cutest little egg. I am guessing that the other two will wait until spring. I have two australops and one buff orphingtin. It is one of the australops that is laying, and she looks...

NOW I know what was going in in her little brain

So do I feed them all layer food or do I stick to grower until they are all laying then?

NOW I know what was going in in her little brain

I wasn't really expecting them to start this year. A farmer convinced me that they would start next spring because they tend to go into molt at this time of the year. Since my coop was full of feathers at some point I figured that had happened. One of them (the one that was acting strange) did...

NOW I know what was going in in her little brain

I posted earlier today a story of my crazy chicken that was acting strangely and wanted to go in my house constantly. Someone suggested that she wanted to check out my coop to look for a good place to roost or make a nest. Turned out she was right! She was looking for a place to put her first...

Can someone tell me what is going on in this chickens little brain?

I do not put their regular food out when I let them out. I figured that they could search for their own food for the hours they get to be outside, there should be plenty of stuff for them. Often I will serve them a snack for outside, like today they got some scrambled egg leftovers. Should I put...

Can someone tell me what is going on in this chickens little brain?

I have been letting my three girls free range in my backyard for a while now. They are doing great, they run in there when I open the gate and they go in, and in the evening they return to their coop when I let them out. All three like to hang out on the patio right outside the door to the...
